If Tesco generally put up their prices, you would expect Joe Public to seek out their competitors.

Crazily enough, not too many people do the same when energy prices rise, even though it's probably their second largest overhead after their rent/mortgage. According to Martin Lewis' website, 2/3rds of the big six suppliers' customers are still on the standard tariffs.

If Joe can't be bothered to seek out a cheaper deal, suppliers of all manner of goods & services will take advantage of the customer's generosity. All down to the lack of financial education in this country, I'm afraid

Second largest overhead? Council tax is about three times as much as gas and leccy put together!

You can control the cost of utilities by seeking out the cheapest provider, council tax not quite the same, unless you move obvs.

Depends where you live. Average fuel bill on standard tariff is reckoned to be approaching £1200 a year

Eon bill 78/month, council tax 265/month. Hartlepool council tax is extortionate compared to most of the rest of the country, especially for what we actually get by way of local services.

£78 per month for gas and electric?

I'm going to have to shop around, SSE have just put my electric up to £71, but they put my gas down to £44 per month
