Shilton. I was probably about 14 year old when he 'played' for us but he definitely made an impression on me, even at a young age... obviously not in a good way!

Poor , but seen a lot worse PJ. He made his debut v Notts Co in FA CUP 2ND ROUND in 1988, a great day out, remember the Mill House pub was rocking that night , everyone seemed to want to stay out after the game

I'm always been clouded on this one I was mascot against Hereford in 1989, we were bottom of the League Bob Moncur had just left and Pop Robson was assistant manager. We had luminaries like Alan Lamb and Jade Sinclair in the team. Anyway in the warm up before the game Frank Reid came up and said "who's your favourite player" and I replied very quickly "Rob McKinnon" after a bit of looking about it transpired my favourite player had already returned to the portakabins, sorry dressing rooms, as they were at the time and then he uterred those infamous words......... "Will Rob Moverley do"

I'll have to dig the picture out one day from my Mam and Dads and make it my profile picture. Even as a 7 year old I looked visibly pissed off.

Sam Shilton!?

He was a half decent player. Scored a great goal against the Hodgy/George Reynolds 'we'll never play you again' team.

Shilton was okay, anyone who scores v Darlo cant be one of our worst players, it was only his second game for us, and my daughter was mascot, so I have a soft spot for Sam Shilton and Lee Fitzpatrick, the scorers that day

John Trewick was awful for us, as was Stan McEwan.

Another 2 terrible players for us of that era were Paul Williams a big centre half who left us went to Stockport I think, then West Brom and played international football for NIreland as a centre forward.

He played alongside an old team mate of mine Tony Barrass who was shocking for us in an awful side, left and ended up having a really good career at York and Stockport, Reading and Notts County amongst others. Good lad Tony but in wrong team at wrong time with one of the worst managers in Pools history, Bob Moncur.

Spraggon only lasted 20 minutes into his debut , before getting carried off injured at Aldershot, never to be seen again

Sharp was player of the year in his first season I think. Was superb, but went off the boil in the second.

Going with John Borthwick. He couldn't stop scoring goals in non-league then signed for us and scored 17 times in 136 appearances.

To cap it all, he went to Darlington and was their top scorer two seasons running as they won consecutive promotions from the Conference and the Fourth Division.

James Sharp has got to be the strangest signing I have ever seen at Pools. The first time he played, I thought we had signed a Rugby player by mistake, he didn't look remotely like a footballer. He was subsequently gash, was banished to the reserves after a nightmare game at Brighton , were Bobby Zamora tore him a new arse. He came back a few months later, and was immense , as we got into the play offs , and winning POTY and Away or Young player of the year. The following season , I can only assume he ran out of magic dust, as he returned to his normal self.

No way the worst though.

Wasn't his first game at Lincoln and he met his team mates for the first time when boarding the bus? My memory is that he had a cracking debut...............

Yeah his debut was at Lincoln and nobody knew who he was, he had a blinder and had a brilliant season winning player of the year. I also think we including another unknown centre back called Barry Ferguson on loan from Coventry. Red hot day loads of poolies and we won 2-0 I think Lee Fitzpatrick got both.

I'm not sure what happened the next season to him, I remember being at Macclesfield on a Tuesday night and him stamping on someone for no reason at all getting himself sent off. We still won 1-0 I think thanks to a Boydy goal.

[quote="Chip Fireball"]People need to remember that there hasn't always been automatic relegation from the Football League.

There was a 5 season period between 59 and 64 ( thankfully before I was born ) where we finished 24th, 23rd, 22nd, 24th and 23rd, of the Fourth Division so I suspect we had some pretty awful players then.

hard to think of anyone signed in that period who was anygood. stonehouse and biltcliffe would have been outpaced by long john silver without his crutch.

Not a bad shout.... my comment at the time was along the lines of "White men can't jump.... well this one can't anyway...."

There were so many in that spell in the 90s when Gibson's money ran out; partly because we were that desperate that most of the youth team got plunged into the full squad, and we had to scrape around for anyone cheap enough to afford.... Steve Jones was a classic example - he wasn't much good, but he tried his hardest in a pretty awful team and I don't really want him remembered as the worst ever - hopelessly out of his depth maybe, but at least he gave it a go.

Looking at say the 95/6 side for example, we had some fading names (Joe Allon and Keith Houchen, plus Mick Tait), and players who played significant numbers of games including Shane Reddish, Tony Canham, Damian Henderson and Denny Ingram. Ingram played about 200 times for us overall, based mainly on flexibility (all over the back 4, plus I think a midfield holding role at one point), being occasionally competent, and probably not taking too much of a wage....

I think the reason most of last season's squad are escaping this is that we knew that most of them were capable of more than they showed, and that often the problem was tactical rather than effort - with some exceptions of course.... The ones I'd think of as worst are those that arrived with a big reputation, or on big wages, and never looked interested - it will always be too soon Steve Howard's second spell, for example, or for sheer disappointment Nobby Solano. I absolve Peter Beardsley of this because he at least gave it a go, showed the odd flash that changed a game, and the buzz it created around a club that was sleepwalking into relegation did IMO make a difference that season.

Yeah , think we signed him at 4.59pm the night before. My memories of Lincoln , were of him , looking like a fish out of water, an average debut at best, but must of played his part in a memorable win.

Jan Budtz, Rune Lange, Behan or possibly Jamie McCunnie (who i remember not being fantastic)

I was going to put Michael Mackay but i remembered his goal which was wrongly ruled offside which would have either kept us up or won us the league ... can't remember which

Rune Lange? Are you serious?

The lad looked a class act the very few times he played for us. He might make it in the most injury prone players list, but certainly not the worst footballers.

Behan was gash like, no disputing that.

Was it him who Paul Merson said was class after we played Arsenal in the League Cup. He must have be been deep in the midst of drink and drugs at that point! I could be getting confused with someone else, Matty Hysen??

Rune Lange would have been an incredible signing if he had any knees left.

Rune lange is a ridiculous shout!, the bloke had proven pedigree playing for club brugge and had it not been for bad injuries he would never had ended up playing for pools!
One shitty mid 90s player I remember was Andy elliot signed from Spennymoor on the night of a home game against Northampton, played a handful of games then dissappeared due to him being way below standard!.
