Loach, Magnay, Harrison, Laing, Adams, Newton, Woods, Deverdics, Donaldson, Munns, Cassidy.

Subs: Catterick, Gould, Richardson, Sadike, Risborough, Hawkins, Featherstone, Travers, Amond, Mondal.

No sign of George or Donnelly, a worrying lack of facial hair in the team..

Looks like they are starting 4-1-4-1 with Newton playing just in front of the back 4. Donaldson on the right and Munns on the left.

Laing looks massive like.

 Height x Breadth.

Looks very fit though, they all do, Featherstone is the only one carrying a bit of gut after his op.

1-0 down, ripped apart down our right, cross into the box headed in low by their no9, little challenge in the centre. Their left winger looks useful.

1-0 St Johnstone could have stopped the cross coming in for a fairly easy finish. They've got whatbseems to be a trialist playing along the top line that's causing us trouble.

Is that MacLean who scored against us in the playoff final?

Chester fans warned us George very injury prone and not bothered about losing him

Been solid since the goal, but StJ just put a move together that was nearly a 2nd goal. Losing shape too easily in midfield, woods and newton getting pulled out of position.

Pools growing into it and have bossed the last 5 mins, passing very tidy, need more presence up front though.

Loach just flapped at a 18yard shot straight at him, at head height though..

We've got more possession but StJ looking dangerous whenever they get it

Lodge on for Cassidy. Same formation.

Cassidy played with his back to goal for most of the 1st half, put himself about a bit, but their Centre Half had him in his pocket.

Pretty even so far, Newton looks much better coming forward than sitting deep. Passing is accurate and very good at picking a through-ball.

Mondal, Sidike and Gould coming on for Munns, Laing and Loach.

Sidike is also massive, reminds me of McGuckin when he was at his fittest.

Game went a bit scrappy after the subs, but pools starting to get on top with more possession now. Featherstone looking better in the holding role, mopping up when the attacks break down and keeping the pressure on.

Goalmouth scramble there in Pools goal, 3 times we tried to clear and hit someone in the back, a good save by Gould and then ball deflected wide

1-0 Full Time

Plenty of possession, knocked it around well but with little penetration , solid at the back, a bit lightweight up front, 1 up front still doesn't work for me. Although I don't think we'll be up against many defences as strong as that this season.

Same opinion on the game as yourself Mctee1908. We looked comfortable at the back, the midfield was certainly stronger than I have seen in a while, thought Deverdics had a good game. Play in the final third frustrated the tits off me. Mondal looked decent when he came on.

Well, not long back after our nearest Pools game in 25 yrs (more of those please !), agree with most of what's been said. St Johnstone seem a decent side, not mugs or thugs so a good work out, defensively reasonably solid (goal apart !), midfield steady but without any real forward poke or menace and totally inept up front. Hardly surprising with a lone striker lacking in support, better with Podge on, boy do we need to hang onto him but he desperately needs a partner, worried that our lack of a frontline threat will be an achillies heel this season.

I think the last 2 games at 4-5-1 ill have told the manager everything he needs to know.

4-4-2 please for the love of god.

The last two games have been against higher opposition so I suppose the positive is we've only been breached once in open play.

So maybe away from home it could be the right system? We've got to go two up front against Dover though surely? Amond and Cassidy.

Another defeat , hey but the fitness levels must be going through the roof now. About time he played his starting 11 v Boro U23s , bin the triallists, men v boys , lets wipe them off the park. Not ideal imo, the last game been at Whitley Bay, if we win 7-0 what does that prove?. Hopefully the step down in class , when the real stuff begins, will be our saving grace.

What would be ideal, you'd twist on 21?

The team needs some pace in it.

We've played Sunderland, who were in the Premier last year and fielded most of their 1st team, and St Johnstone, who finished 4th in Scotland last year, played in Europe last week and fielded most of their 1st team today. We lost by 1 goal in both matches, and were competitive in both. Crawley lost 6-0 to Brighton today, I know which result and performance I would prefer.

The 4-1-4-1 formation looks more like something that would be used more for away games where we expect to be attacked more, where we can retain possession and then nick a goal, but we need to be quicker on the break to counter attack in that formation. At home I'd expect it to be more attacking, probably 4-4-2, and that is what we should play in the last game. I'd expect it to be the 1st team against Boro and the reserves/trialists against Whitley Bay.

Home game v League 1 or 2 side , then away to National Lge North, South Shields or Scottish Championship side

I was speaking with Mark Simpson before the game about this, Rodney is struggling with a groin injury I think it was.
