Didn't get down tonight but sounds like a reasonable performance against a fairly strong team.

Anyone stand out and any concerns over the injuries?

Meanwhile at Bootham Crescent things are looking up for York after a difficult couple of years;

York City 0-8 Blackburn Rovers

Just home from work and went to check the result. As I was doing so I thought, I can't remember last time we scored against one of the 'bigger' neighbours. In my mind we always lose 4-0. (Someone will probably tell me we scored against one of them last pre-season...) Anyway, pleasant surprise and on the face of it, pretty promising. Nick L seemed happy enough on twitter. Onwards and upwards.

not a bad game but pools held their own in a typical friendly
2 mistakes led to their goals how ever on the night the back 5 looked as good as we have had for a few years.
Midfield got stuck in but up top we lacked a bit of pace.

We're Donnelly and Oates substitutions just precautions or "proper" injuries?

Very close game. You would never think there is 3 leagues between the 2 teams.

Not a bad game and we played some good stuff.

Agree with the above, we lack a little pace going forward.

Munns pass for the goal was sublime.

Oates looked like he done his groin. Donnelly looked like a dead leg or thigh injury

Thought both Munns and Adams were excellent. Donaldson looked busy and took his goal well. Newton struggled a bit first half, Laing was caught on the wrong side for the penalty, though it did look soft. Loach made one good save in the first half and whilst it was a great strike for their winner, I thought he left too much of a gap.

I thought Loach didn't look particularly agile. The free kick at the end although it was quite good, Loach didn't seem to be able to get his body across very quickly. I also thought Woods had a very good game

Not concerned with that back 5 in the slightest. Looked well drilled. My only concern is that the back up if any of them get injured is poor. We need another centre back.

I know who would be the happier of the 2 managers, I feel encouraged by that and am looking forward to the season.

Some chunk missing out of Harrisons leg, must have been some injury that.

"Eltringham, 20 at the time, was progressing nicely in his fledgeling career with the whistle but following his beloved Sunderland, home and away"

I know it's only a friendly but in the interests of fairness having a fan of the team as the ref seems a bit daft...

I might have dreamt it but I'm pretty sure Frank Reid or his brother used to run the line at Pools reserves games long ago.

Didn't Tony Harrington ref one of our friendlies a few year back?

Sunderland were shi*e , all their fans said so , yet we still managed to get beat. Pools steady away, but 2 costly errors, a possible sending off if in a league game and a couple of examples of poor decision making in front of goal + 2 injuries are cause for concern. Lets hope we can play so poor and win , when the real stuff begins.

Donaldson took goal well and could be the key player for us this season.

Surely Loach has the ability to save a shot on target though?

Supermarine ! spent many a Saturday afternoon up there in the 90s, with a portable radio listening for the pools result. £8 is a bit steep for a friendly. Who was the player Bignall ?

Yes, in a way he does. I realise it's still very early days but I don't think he can be described as a cat. Big keepers are rarely agile, I think we were probably spoilt with Carson who was very reactive.

On the highlights anyway the penalty looked an absolutely absurd decision our lad was a bit hesitant but the Sunderland player put both his hands around his neck, it was surely a free kick the other way if anything?

Yes.

You can pretty much guarantee any random lower league or upper non league game you go to, there will be someone playing that has netted against Pools.

Weather permitting taking in some cricket tonight, Theale and Tilehurst under 15's vs Newbury under 15's.

are you allowed that near young lads again already ??

Its always just a friendly when we get beat though. Harrogate beat us, why couldn't we beat a very poor Sunderland ( and yes , that could be their starting eleven ). We need a result on Saturday, but if St Johnstone put their first team out , we could get tonked. Hopefully they will put a reserve side out , as their season is well underway , bet they still beat us though.

Even a shite championship team should be stuffing a non league outfit and have you even considered that they were shite because we didn't let them play good?

I know you're a troll but Jesus christ.

Great riposte ! FFS! A shite National League side should be stuffing Harrogate , but did we?.

Love this new tactic of not allowing a team to play good yet still getting beat, sure that will catch on.

I'm only a genius in comparison to you

Well none of us are psychic, but I'm sure Harrison and Grayson more or less know what team they would like to field come the big opening day. They know best, though for me, I would of played the team that played first half at Harrogate for the whole game, and hopefully came away with a victory. All about opinions, but I do think friendlies matter, it only seems to not matter to the losers.

It's a balance you obviously try to win but at the same time you have to manage your full squad and make sure that they all have enough minutes into their legs and enough opportunity to impress and stake a claim. You also have to factor in trialists if they aren't going to get game time then what's the point of even having them on trial? So to suggest playing a full team for 90 minutes in pre season nearly as daft as going on about results. Harrogate are only one division below us and we fielded a team of back players and trialists. Last night is probably a better indication of how we're shaping up against a team 3 divisions above us who brought a full first team squad against our first team squad. York played a team with the same divisional gap at home and lost 8-0. Calling people losers for having a common sense approach to pre season is a bit pathetic and smacks of attention seeking to be honest.

None of this matters a jot come August 5th, these are meaningless fixtures that count to nothing. You want to coming out of pre season with a good idea how want to start in terms of line up and team shape, with a fully fit and confident squad. Things seem fairly positive so far apart from one or two knocks.

To be honest im not bothered about any team we play against im only interested in pools.
When i walked out after the last game of the season and then followed by the coxall fiasco i like many feared for the club i support.
When i went to the match last night the ground is looking good, the pitch looked immaculate and pools on the night played some good football.
So lets be positive about the season ahead and just see how we go and you just never know we might even do well or better than expected.
