It's at

http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/hartlepool11/

You've got to select from a shortlist, which is frustrating as hell, but still spoiled for choice, in the forwards department especially.

I went for

Dimi

Barron Moore Ayre McKinnon

Honour Tinkler Emerson

Porter Watson Allon

I left out Jan Ove Pedersen, but only because he was a loan player and you could do a whole other list for pools Greatest Loan Players!

Limited selection and guided by my only really seeing pools from 91 onwards and very little of Brian, I've gone for:

Dimi

Keith knobbs
Rob McKinnon
Barron
Nelse (without hair)

Tinks
Stephenson (for that one season in centre mid)
Miller

Watson
Boyd
Porter

No Chris Westwood? He made Nelson look good!

More importantly, no Jordan Mellish!!!

Once again it's all about opinions but the one player not mentioned was for me one of the best players I saw in a Pools shirt George Luke but that was in the late fifties when I presume most people on here were not born.

Nelson was good.

It's amazing the clog some of the players get from some of our best ever teams on here it really is.

Bit limited and can select same player more than once.

As with any vote of this sort it's always mainly going to feature more recent players. When I say more recent I don't mean anyone in the last 10 years as they've been shite. Not sure how Flinders is on there like, Jake Keen or Steve Harper must have played as many games as Pedersen.

Judging his first 2 or 3 seasons at Pools he'd be in my top 3 or 4 permanent keepers we had. Judging in his last season it two he wouldn't I suppose it's what you judge him on. At his best he was a good keeper.

Amazing how many players come here and are good at first and then turn utter shit especially at what should have been his prime.

Of course it couldn't be because people massively overrate players because of their 'experience' or 'pedigree' and takes them ages to realize what they are actually watching. Oh no.

Thats right nobody knows what they are watching apart from you.

I mean for example you seriously don't think Humphreys should be included?

Did you not see any of Turner/Newell promotion season? He was one of the best players in the division that season.

It's called debate these things are meant to provoke that.

You making snide one line arsey comment shocker. It genuinely interests me that a lot of players like Barron/Humphreys/Nelson who were great players for us when we used to win regularly and play great football get pelters and I'm not sure why.

I thought there must be about 20 keepers listed but it's only 5/6!!! Fuck me who did this?

If Loan players count why isn't Harper there?

No Westwood?

Luke James is listed??

Jan Ove should be in every team, if not you have pickled onions for eyes (or never saw him)

It's a nonsense poll. What about Clough team or those who went before. Essentially it's a list of players from the last 20 or so years, why is it 'greatest ever' ?

How many people have seen every player we've had? Unless it's every voter the whole poll is a bit flawed.

Picking from what is available, I have selected.
Watling
Barron Moore Goad Drysdale.
Miller Tinkler McGuigan
Boyd Johnson Porter.
I don't know why the choice is limited by the Echo, perhaps it's because the paper itself is limited. However it is a bit of fun.
I agree with a previous poster regarding George Luke. He is definitely the best left winger I have seen in a Pools shirt.

Clearly a flawed list.

No idea how Dean Emerson made it onto the list and where on earth are the Linighan brothers both of which ended up playing in the top flight.

I would rate Andy Linighan as probably our best ever centre half.

One based on decades would be ideal. My first Pools game was in the early 80s, so I can't really choose anyone from before then.

Exactly, it's a quick flick list of recent players. There were other players before the year 2000.

Westwood was by far a better player but they complimented each other well.

I actually thought Nelson was a great ball winning centre back and didn't intend my comment to state otherwise. Westwood played a bit of a sweeper role behind him and covered for a lot of errors he made (which all players do). Don't think I was throwing 'pelters' at anyone though.

Nelson was great in his first few seasons but he was lucky to have Westy then Ben Clark next to him. Made a quality player look/perform even better.

Fookin ell we had some ellish players not that long ago didn't we?

Yep, agree on Emerson, he was a superb player. He bossed the midfield in the 1992/93 season when we reached the turn of the year 4th in the table, against the likes of Stoke, West Brom, Hull, Fulham, Burnley, Swansea, Bournemouth etc.. he got injured just after the FACup win against Crystal Palace (fractured cheekbone I think) and didn't play right through the record breaking run without a goal. We only started to pick back up again once he returned.

Anyone choosing Porter instead of Boyd wants their head looking at.

Boyd, Watson & Allon for me.

Also anyone choosing Humphreys in Midfield is a bit mental too.

As for Flinders, wow.

Very limited choice, formation etc. but have had a go.

Dimi, Nobbs, McKinnon, Emerson, Macphail, Moore, Tinkler, Miller, Watson, Boyd, Porter.

Would pick differently if I had a free choice like.

Boyd was unplayable when he could be bothered. Humphreys was brilliant when he played the number 10 role off Gordon Watson, as was Miller when he played as the most attacking of 3 Central Midfielders in a 3-5-2.
None of them were consistently at that level though.

This.

If we're judging them as players, performances on the pitch, then Humphreys should be on the list. After a dire start to the 2006-07 season it was his goal that kick started the" we are unbeatable" season. For a player surely there's no greater acclaim than to be respected by your fellow pros and he was duly voted into the League 2(or whatever it was at the time) PFA team.

He wouldn't be in my all time Pools team, mind.

Some notable absences from the list. As well as George Luke and the Linighan brothers, there's Bill Green ,who played centre half in the top flight with West Ham and is still a legend at Carlisle, and Phil Gilchrist.

For me Chris Westwood is the best sweeper/second centre back we've had for along time, but Gilchrist always had time at the back and oozed class. He'd be in my team.

Mark Lawrence is often overlooked. He was a Rolls Royce of a player with a good touch, a great engine and an eye for goal He was surely destined for greater things when his career was cut short unnecessarily, playing in a local 5-a-side on Teesside.

A tragedy for a player with the world at his feet, especially when you compare him with someone like Nathan Luscombe who totally wasted his career.

That's not surprising - he only played 17 times for Pools. Odd to include a loan player, but no dafter than having Luke James on the list. Still, it's a bit of fun/starter for a conversation - or should that be starter for a chunter?

The alternative is trawling through a couple of thousand names on In The Mad Crowd.

I have vague memories of young forward who was very promising in the late 80's who's career got cut short by a cruciate injury when we was about 20. Simon Grayson rings a bell??

Best player I've ever seen was Jan Ove Pedersen but I suppose you could argue he wasn't at pools long enough. Easily the most talented

I remember Grayson well - was destined for greater things but a (knee?) injury forced him to pack in at a very young age. Had a presence about him and a great finisher - we got him from one of the Sheffield clubs, he played about a season and had to pack it all in.

I would have Porter over Boyd because of their consistency over time. Boyd's second spell was really underwhelming. Porter was quality throughout.

Boyd was gifted, but didn't use it. Porter did.

Where's Dalton! Ripped teams to bits by himself in the 1991/1992 season.

Emerson was quality by the way. The only proper "midfield general" I've seen playing for Pools. Ellish ginger tache too.

and Gustavo di lella....

I'll book you in to have your head looked at then

I get where you're coming from but without that injury and subsequent infection Boydy could have done that season after season. With any best ever team you're only ever looking at a snapshot so in that case I'd have Boyd, Allon and Watson. All three are head and shoulders above anyone else we've had.

Midfield is the hardest to pick for me, agree with above that Dalton being missed is criminal. Almost as criminal as the addition of Flinders. FLINDERS FFS!

It happens at all clubs though, doesn't it? Liverpool used to do, shit hot, players cut loose when they were no longer needed. RH probably stayed a little to long at the club, but so what? ,it's not his fault we got relegated and if you didn't enjoy his performances for us during his prime, I think it's a form of attention seeking which you have shown on all incarnations of this message board and it will never change

Boyd COULD have done it but couldn't get his shit together. How many games did he frustrate the fook out of everybody, including his own team mates?

In Porter's last season here he more or less kept us up by himself. And he would have preferred not to be here, but contract option taken up by the club meant he had to.
