Just had another listen to Echo and The Bunnymen's Crocodiles.

That'll take some beating.

That takes some beating, a brilliant album by a brilliant band! The hurting by tears for fears is also quality!

I think that was Hooky, who was married to Caroline Aherne, if I'm remembering correctly.

The Ramones and Down by The Jetty by Dr Feelgood. Both kept making pretty much the same record again and again but never quite reached the standard of their mighty debut efforts.

The House of Love, cracking debut album
Box set go by The High brings back great memories.

As for Showaddywaddy I preferred their later works!

The most underhyped band of their time.

Screaming Target by Big Youth and Best Dressed Chicken in Town by Dr Alimantado are both near unbeatable DJ reggae albums and they'd both only done singles before them.

I have all five albums in his list, some very good albums. I think the second Penetration album is as good as the first.

Aye, "Come Into The Open" ...in my Top Ten singles of all time.

Got all of those albums on lovely black plastic...except "Moving Targets" which is supposed to be dayglo but just looks shite!!

Mogwai - Young Team (if that counts as debut)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - f#a#oo (see above)
Salako - "rE-inVentiNg; Punc.tUat?iOn>:
Gretschen Hofner - Maria Callous
Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
Tindersticks - Tindersticks
Pixies - Surfer Rosa (I'm counting Come On Pilgrim as an EP)
The Flaming Stars - Songs From The Bar Room Floor
Shellac - At Action Park

Ah Shellac's At Action Park, what a beast of a record that is, probably Albini's finest. Was listening to Rapeman's Two Nuns And A Pack Mule earlier which I suppose also counts....

Others great debuts not yet mentioned:

Maxinquaye - Tricky
Back In The DHSS - Half Man Half Biscuit
Fuzzy Logic -Super Furry Animals
Eleven:Eleven - Come
George Best - The Wedding Present
License To Ill - Beastie Boys
Dry - PJ Harvey
Safe As Milk - Captain Beefheart
Pod - The Breeders
Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot - Sparklehorse
Yerself Is Steam - Mercury Rev

A great nights listening there....

Deacon Blue - Raintown
Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists
Stereophonics - Word Gets Around

Also a special mention to Ween, every album of there's is class.

Great call for George Best by The Wedding Present (headlining an indie all dater May bank holiday in Manchester to play album in full by the way). A cliched but excellent debut album Whatever People Say I am that's what I'm not - Arctic Monkeys
