This weekend I went to a festival and saw loads of bands, two of which (King Gizzard and the Oh Sees) had two drummers. Both bands were excellent, but I fail to see what the extra drummer brought to the sound. Or am I just missing something?

Someone told me Pavement did as well. And I'm sure James Brown's band used to have three.

The Allman Brothers, The Doobie Brothers and The Grateful Dead all spring to mind (as well as The Glitter Band - but that's best swept under the carpet). Maybe it allows more complex rhythm patterns or summat, or two crap drummers add up to one decent one. If you look at Latin American bands drummers of some description usually outnumber the rest of the band put together and they kick up a poly-rhythmic tornado!

Pavement only had one drummer when I saw them and the Three Johns had no drummer which was very unusual for a guitar based band at the time. One time I saw them leave the stage and go for a pint at the bar at the back of the room while their guitars were hung on a washing line playing feedback over the top of a drum machine. Odd but good.

Maybe it was more autobiographical than I thought...

I've always thought 'Kings of the Wild Frontier' summed the two drummers thing up - two drummers and amps that go up to 11.

I mean, the great jazz combos never arsed around with two drummers - what would be the point?

For their "Seconds Out" live album Genesis had two drummers on several tracks, mainly Phil Collins and Chester Thompson, with Collins and Bill Bruford drumming on "Cinema Show" which was recorded about a year before the rest of the album.

I'm going to see French musical phenomena Magma in Edinburgh on the 21st. They only have one drummer (Christian Vander) but sound like they have half a dozen!
