Well if the squad/players/strength in depth are as good as Higgy makes us out to be.
Then surely it has to be an away win.
Them 1 Us 2.
Paynter n Thomas.

Quite a few people called 2-1 with one of the scorers right, well played.

I had a single on Pools to win 2-1 @12-1.
Three doubles and a treble on Pools, Gillingham and Wycombe.
They all won 2-1. I should have took them all to win 2-1 but it never even crossed my mind.
A good start to the season though.

How did we manage to win when we can't score against teams in higher leagues???

I'm still not happy that it was Paynter who scored the winner. If he carries on like this we are in trouble.

We've only got 2/3 of the points we had at this stage last season.
So on target for 34 points...long,hard winter ahead!

A lot depends on the recruitment of decent guano collectors.

So did Jones take a knock?

Quite surprised Bates didn't start, best Centre back we have imo.

Back four were really good today, looked slightly better when Bates replaced Jones but both line ups were comfortable.
Lack of concentration from Magnay for their goal.
Nsaila MOTM for me.

Great result

Like I said in an earlier post, I thought the first half was pretty dull from both sides.

Magnay was at fault for their goal - turned his back at a throw in and lost the lad he was meant to be marking who then played in the lad who scored.

We went with what looked to me more like a five man midfield with Billy up top on his own in the first half, I'm assuming that was to flood the midfield and prevent them playing through us....but I think it hamstrung us a bit. Billy, for me, is better suited playing with either a strike partner or with two wingers close at hand or a central attacking midfielder because he's better at holding up play and then playing the short ball before turning and heading goalward as opposed to holding up play and spraying a 30 yard ball to a distant winger - not saying he can't do that, I just think he's better with players closer to him.

Exeter's back four played a high line as well and they pressed us in our own half which we really struggled to cope with. We either passed it across the back four before it eventually found it's way to Carson who then cleared to a wing before it all started again.

Thomas barely got a kick in the first half and was a bit off it when he did. Not his best half.

Jones was having a chat with Buster on his way off the pitch and he was holding his head so assume he went off with an injury but not sure.

It was a pretty poor first half and like I said in the other post I made during half time, I felt 442 would be a much better approach, because the packed midfield just wasn't working.....then on came Amond :)

Much better half and the game opened up with the changes we made. Also meant they created more chances as well though and for the first 10mins it looked like they could go on and get another....thought they had when they had a free kick just outside the box which hit the bar.

Thomas was much livelier and made a decent chance for himself and forced their keeper into a save - their keeper looked a bit dodgy to me, distribution was terrible and looked a bit panicked when in possession.

Carroll needed a bloody cap in the second half...when the ball was lumped forward by their keeper he had to try to shield his eyes from the sun whilst keeping an eye on their right winger and running backwards, needless to say, the ball dropped over his head more often than he was able to head clear which was a bit worrying but there really wasn't a lot more he could've done.

Amond REALLY should've scoredwhen one on one with the keeper but toe'd it wide. BUT he was a nuisance, made some decent runs, put a shift in and gave Paynter more space as their centre halves had to deal with two up top.

We really did look dangerous going forward once we got ourselves sorted and we could've had a couple more, as I said earlier though, they had a few chances too and one of their lads appeared to miss a sitter near the end with a header that looked easier to score, but it was difficult to see from the far end.

Nsiala didn't worry me as much as he has in the past and didn't try any Cryuff turns.

Really chuffed that Woods stuck his chance away - decent player, can pick a pass, beat a man, not shy in the tackle but finishing really isn't his strength.

Alessandra was the same as he's been, full of running, good on the ball and I could see him scoring double figures if he gets the chances.

One thing that was really good to see was we didn't drop to the edge of our 18-yard box when 2-1 up, we continued to look dangerous and I felt comfortable...other than their late chance.

Cheers Shilts, was a nice 10-15 passing move for the second goal too, shame normal highlights dont show it all!

I see Amond says he dummied the ball for Paynter but looked to me like he tried to flick it but missed but il give him benefit of the doubt!

Jones took a knock to the head, must be about the 3rd game iv seen him come off with one of those!

According to the Exeter local paper Jones was an 'accident waiting to happen' all half.

They must have had the ouija board out!

Apart from his debut, iv not been overly impressed at all.

The team always looks more solid with Bates in the side, hopefully Bates and Toto on Tuesday and give them a string of games to get a partnership and understanding going.

Aye, I've noticed that too. Most head injuries by any player ever I reckon.

Which is strange considering he's got a good 6 inches on any other player in our division.

Errrr...

I just don't see the relevance Mr Loop.

Now, if you had said he's significantly taller than the average forward then I'd have said you had a point.

As it is, it's a shame you've chosen to lower the tone on what was otherwise a decent, clean and fish pun free thread.

Poor.
