Just had the so called superfast 8gb btbroadband installed and it does not seem that faster.

I know nowt about computers and it seems you have to sign up for this and that on the sites I have visited so far to check speed.

I've just done that and got a result of 1952kbps download and 182kbps upload. Got 1959/185 on second go. I suppose, from my little understanding of Computers, that ties in with my 2Gb broadband speed?

Someone I know who worked for talk talk reckons that speeds of 2500 kps is about as fast as you'll get in Hartlepool using a BT line. Even if you are supposedly paying for 8 mb broadband you will get no where near using a bt line. Virgin Media is different due to having more advanced fibre optic technology apparently.

On BT - internal extension cables and other users in your postcode being online can slow your connection further.

Depends on the speed limit...you may have speed bumps in the line if it's near a school and cameras will follow.

urban myth - if you lived next door to the xchange you would get a much quicker speed - but on the whole as a broad guideline you want to knock about 1 to 1.2M off your attainable speed for every kilometre in length of your phone cable. bear in mind that you could easily have 200 metres of cable in the exchange and more in metropolitan areas. and even more if you receive a service through your phone line from the likes of talktalk tiscali etc - so theres 1/2M of before it's even started.

the length of your cable is also not the physical distance away from the exchange as cables are never routed as the crow flies and you can see massive variations between neighboroughing properties.

The quality of the cable as well will also have a bearing on the speed as the more the line has degraded over the years the less you will get out of it - the bulk of BT cabling in UK is approx 60 years old - BT should be looking at replacing it but you can imagine the cost but if they did then speeds they are talking of getting in the far east of 100M could be acheived.

BT re skirting round this by upgrading some exchange equipment rather than the cabling (logistcal nightmare) they are reformatting processes - Hartlepool exchange is meant to be done in 2nd quarter of 2011 and should enable better speeds and service - but if i was in bt i'd expect lots of probs - http://www.btplc.com/21CN/Thetechnologyofthenetwork/21CNtechnologyintheUK/21CNtechnologyintheUK.htm

this is more than two years past the initial rollouts though so teething problems should be smoothed out.

anyone awake rolfl
