I've been having a debate with people who run the local team that my stepdaughter plays for (under 9s). Basically about the training equipment and what I see as poor value for money in that all parents pay £21 a month. This is meant to get the kids a training kit, footys and a match every weekend in the kids league.

Does anyone have their kids in a local team and can I ask how much it costs. 21 quid seems a bit steep to me but maybe it isn't?

Also I've been told the training kit they get provided costs the club 60quid. That seems high to me.

Cheers

Most I've seen are upto £5 a week so £21 a month isn't unreasonable, especially with kit etc included. I suppose it depends on if she enjoys it and if you think the standard of coaching warrants it.

What's 21 a month if she enjoys it.

I agree that 21 is OK as long as she enjoys it. Whats got my goat is that I got a message last night to say that if the team wishes to enter a tournament we will have to fund raise to do so. Personally I think the subs fees should cover a few tournaments a year and I can't see where the money gets spent.

My son plays in Durham and it's £15 per month but that's the cheapest in the league...one club through here charges £40 per month.

There are a lot of other things clubs have to pay for on top of kit including hire of pitches, registration fees, insurance, presentations and the like. £21 is an average amount.

my young un plays for a good under 11s side in the Russell Foster league and we pay £3 a match and £2 for training. The club does lots of fundraising and is fantastic value for money https://www.facebook.com/hartvillagefootball?fref=ts

Seems steep to me but I'm a Yorkshireman so that's hardly surprising.

My lad only pays £20 to sign on for the season and £2 a week. They have a few fundraising events throughout the season but you don't need to attend if you don't want and it's not held against you if you don't.

In fact he's played in a few different leagues in Yorkshire and the fees are all pretty similar.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I appreciate that such clubs will have bills to pay etc. I got told last night that the training kit which the girls get costs 60 quid per child. I just don't believe that. You can kit an adults team out for 200. When some of the parents (who are hard up) are paying 21 and some don't even have a training kit , the kids are often bringing their own balls to training as there aren't enough it pisses me off.

You are getting the kit as part of your £4 odd a week and you are still moaning about the cost?

What else could she do for a few hours every week for a little as that!? It seems quite reasonable to me. These clubs I imagine have loads of fees to pay like insurance and for referees plus pitch fees that parents don't even think about. £21 seems pretty reasonable to me, you couldn't take her swimming to Millhouse baths for every weekend for that, that would set you back £40+ a month in fact. It's probably twice a week as well isn't it with training and a match?

God knows what the people who volunteer hours of free time to run the team make of you grizzling about a few quid a week. A have a fair idea like

If you hire a 3/4g pitch for an hour for a game of seven aside it costs about £5 a man.

Up until a few weeks ago I WAS the coach doing the training and matches voluntarily. I think £21 is steep on a number of the parents who are struggling to afford it.

So if you were a coach already involved you'd realise what it costs to run a football team?
Seriously you're on a wind up here to get a few bites!

Er no I was the coach. Not the club secretary. I didn't get involved in any financial aspects. Just coaching and taking the squad on match days. Any more wise remarks?

I would rather not say but I don't live in hartlepool. As it was the first coaching role I've had I was simply wondering whether the fees were fairly average. It seems expensive to me but it's new to me hence I was asking the question.

Well stop moaning then like a few other lads have said it is value for money for £5 a week. Not sure how you assume it's expensive if how it sounds you haven't even asked people in your club how the money is spent!

I would sooner not rock the boat by asking for a breakdown of where the money goes to if it can be helped. hence I wanted to know what the average costs of membership to a kids team is. If people say 21 quid is the norm then fair enough and there is no point digging into where the money goes. Had people said that 21 is expensive then it may be worth finding out what the money is being put towards. Hope that makes sense.

Dont listen to them mr beard.

There will be 20 kids in any squad if they need to pay more than £10 a month then someone is taking the piss.

20x10x52 makes just over a grand.

Easily enough coin.

the strips and training kit will be extra so clubs organise bag packing days in morrisons, usually making anoth 600 bar. That pays for all the kit.

Its OK people saying they are happy to pay what the posh parents pay for tennis lessons down at the rar rar club, but what happens when the team gets competitive (about aged 10) and then that not all players get equal game time.

Are those parents happy to pay £40 a month then when there little tommy is on the bench every week?

Of course not, they will then kickoff like bitches.

I fucking hate seeing kids or even shop staff attempting to pack bags. I always avoid them or tell them to do one.

I dont want 2 Litre bottles of water on top of my bread thanks.

 It was meant to be 12, and even then the maths is shit. :uhoh:

Its actually twice as much as I suggested though.

So those chatging forty bar a month must be paying of their credit card bills.

Depending on the team the costs may be there to also cover other teams. When I played at St Francis and we moved to the men's league we were very kindly supported by the club for our pitch fees, league fees etc every season. We didn't have sponsorship so if we wanted a new kit we had to go get a sponsor nor did we have a training kit. We paid 2 quid a game and it went to club. We also had to cover a training session hire. Every summer without fail though all our fees were paid as soon as they were needed which I'm sure some of the lads in here will agree is rare for some teams!

When I helped run Albion we ran ourselves like other men's teams and I always wanted extra in the kitty to cover any unknown costs which might arise. Turned out it covered all the lads fines when we folded so they were happy as the ones who wanted to keep playing signed elsewhere straight away.

21 quid a month for 4 games, training and a training kit seems pretty fair to me!

Experience tells me that in time you will see I was right.

Things I know will happen, cos they always have:

Some parents will start to kick off, when the kids are old enough to play in a competitive league.....why should my kid pay the same when he only gets half a game or less.

Some kids will just not pay. Or rather their parents will not give them any money. Will the club stop these kids playing? Maybe if they are not very good....................but if they are the best players?????????

And its no good getting all politically correct about it, both of the above have happened every year since time begun.

And if a team stops the best playing because they dont pay up, they will go and play for someone else, asnd as the kids get just a bit older, others will leave and join them.

And then your £21-£40 a month paying kid has no team left.

The point here is, it has to be fair for everyone..........some kids really do come from broken backgrounds, but they may be talented. What sort of working class practice would price them out of a game of footy?

Like I said, some of you would rather pay more, in the stupid belief, that by paying more you get a better product. Football doesnt work like that. Never has.

But crack on anyway, and pay whatever you feel is fair. Its your money. I wish lot were the parents of the kids in the team I was running. We would have been loaded.

Absolutely agree chip cos I was the same.

It's a different world now.

You have to virtually drag enough kids there just to make a team.

Those with little uns now will find this out in the next few years.

Charging them makes it even harder to get them there.
