Richie always used to say that when commentating always add something to the picture....don't always state the obvious.

Sadly most commentators today don't heed that advice.

Australia 2-222

He called it as it was and believed in the spirit of the game, remember when he rightly condemned the Greg Chappell underarm bowl of the last ball against NZ. This is one of the reasons he is admired the world over.

Id never heard of that before so just watched it on youtube. Fair play to Benaud and an utteringly disgusting event to take place.

RIP Richie Benaud. Superb cricketer and iconic broadcaster, and also a lovely bloke. Will be sadly missed.

Sorry to crash Richie's thread, but those old school commentators were superb, Laker was amazing but some of the other old school tie types were quite entertaining.

One of my favourite moments was Peter West to Viv Richards after a 1 day international vs England in 1984. Viv was MOM as he seemed to be every game in that period and was interviewed by West who said "Vivian, your genius transcends parochialism". Richards utterly bemused by the sentence mumbles a thank you but Clive Lloyd next to him shouts up "that's the phrase I was looking for". Class
