Anyone been? Spender?

Some friends went there for a holiday recently, thought it was great etc etc, but found that everywhere they went, because there were so few Westerners, they were gawped at, photographed and talked about. They were even refused entrance into a few bars and told the bars were 'closed', despite being full of customers.
Thought it was supposed to be a cosmopolitan city?

I've a cousin in law, an old colleague and an old cricketing friend who live out there. They all love it and have a high standard of living. All white males and don't report any problems about standing out.

I lived there for 9 months its full of westerners everywhere you go so don't know where they were staying maybe in the new territories?

Its a nice place but there isn't a lot to do.

Its too busy and crowded to relax if you want to visit, I would team it up with a break at the beaches in the Philippines which are lovely. Far cheaper and less touristy than Thailand and everyone speaks better English.

I'm not sure which area they were staying in but were visiting a friend who teaches English over there, who didn't think their experience unusual. He did mention, though, that he thought the people 'staring and pointing' were probably Chinese tourists from other areas, rather than 'Hongkongers'.

That didn't explain the bars, though

I would say its unusual anyway I live in Beijing now and even here no one points at me in the street as of yet. Anyway maybe if I go out of town or what have you maybe.

I am not surprised to see this protest flare up with regards to HK and China most or the "Honkies" hate the mainland Chinese.

I met our rass in Hong Kong. I don't like it much. Yes you can get Western food there, of course there's masses of foreigners there, so they have to cater.

The Hong Kong'ers are rude, abrupt, greedy and dismissive whereas the mainland people aren't like that at all in my experience.
