We get the politicians we deserve. They are voted into power by the local electorate. That's the same electorate that rejects the alternative. In Hartlepool the status quo is the way forward, so maybe the alternative just doesn't have the required appeal. Who is responsible for that??? The electorate or the alternative ?????
