Predictable maybe but utterly senseless and tragic. How can firing missiles into a densely populated area full of innocent children be considered in any way justifiable no matter how many devil bangers Hamas have lobbed over the wall?

There argument would be that missiles are being fired from those areas and what is the alternative

Even from 1,000's of miles away firing rockets into a 32x6 mile area where 1,700,000 mostly innocent people live is not the way forward. The civilian casualties vastly outweigh the military and Hamas ones. I'm not sure why the rest of the World is standing back and letting that happen?

Not sure what 'The Rest of the World' can do about this scenario. One thing is for sure the hypocrites within the Shite House wont be pressurising their puppets Cameron & Clegg or calling for UN sanctions against their Israeli buddies despite there being undisputed evidence of their rockets murdering thousands of innocents from a distance. No, the CIA is still busy concocting a case against Putin for a spurious Russian link with the Ukrainian rebels in bringing down that Malaysian Airways plane that shouldn't have been flying over a war zone in the first place. But the Israeli's will say that the enemy is hiding deliberately next to those innocent people, and what is the alternative ? Allow the enemy to fire rockets knowing most of them get stopped and only the odd one or two of your citizens get killed ?
Not sure what the rest of the world should or can do, Israel is surrounded by people who if given the fire power would not hesitate to wipe them out so they are always going to be heavy handed

In this situation anywhere else the people living in Gaza would be fleeing, most wars have refugees, these people are trapped like sitting ducks. It's horrible and some of the stories and pictures get more horrendous by the day. I saw a picture of a boy the other day who must have been no older than my 18 month old son that made me feel physically sick. This can't be right in the year 2014? Surely we have evolved beyond this?

From Israel's perspective you have a group of people firing rockets, trying to kill them and digging tunnels to supply themselves and re-arm
This same group of people are living amongst civilians and deliberately storing weapons next to civilians to try and use them as shields

What do you do given your first remit is to protect yourself and your civilians ?

Btw I know the above is overly simplistic and from the Israel side, as oppose to a balanced view of what is happening, I am just trying to understand that the situation is not black and white.

Hopefully there will be some sort of cease fire but sadly the hatred between the two sides is so deep it will be an ongoing issue

My only experience of Israeli people (apart from once seeing Benjamin Netanyahu outside Throston bookies) was being on an opposite bunk on an 18 hour train journey from Mumbai to Jaipur. It was two lads travelling after leaving national service and they were a pair of rude obnoxious rarfs, which alongside murdering Children gives me two, sorry three, reasons to dislike Israel.

Who started that war in 1967 ? My understanding was that Egypt and Syria launched a surprise build up of people so Israel attacked in advance all pretty fucked up , and each side of course blamed the other the land Israel took is of great strategic advantage, were they supposed to give this land back on the promise that the people they have it back to who had already attacked them once wouldn't do it again ?

I don't want to go on as I don't feel educated enough to do so, all I know is the situation is massively complicated with a lot of passionate and opposite views on both sides

Maybe wishful thinking but hopefully younger generations with more interaction with one another few global technologies will have less hatred and more appreciation of the other side, though it doesn't seem likely when they are bombing shitevout of each other

There was a good piece in the LRB recently on the causes of the current escalation, and it pretty much backs up your argument that Israel were NOT responding to the deaths of those kids, but is rather an opportunity to try and isolate Hamas again.
