Presumptuous git, what makes him think he would ever get picked again anyway ? At least we won't have to put up with his miserable whiney face quite so much, unless..............he's not getting Hansen's job ? Please no.

Well, that's a novel tack to take given Hodgson was desperate for him to stay on and he's not hanging up his boots with Liverpool.

At least Gerrard has been big enough to recognise that he can no longer cut it at international level. If only Woy (or the feckin' FA) were capable of the same insight about the manager's position.

I'm sure the conversation has already been had and the gracious thing to do is let the player announce it.

At least one England captain had the decency to step down today.

He only got the most assists in the Premier League last season. Play him in a three man midfield and he'd be a huge asset. Play him under a clueless dinosaur like Hodgson and he's exposed.

Here's me thinking he played in a three man midfield at the World Cup in exactly the same position as he did for Liverpool...

I'd class a 4-2-3-1 with Sterling/Rooney in the advanced role as a two man midfield, especially with Henderson and Gerrard slightly deeper.

1. Thank fuck gerrard has retired. Over rated wanker.

Aye, mind, his trophy cabinet and his charity work might make a bit of a counter argument for 'over-rated ' and 'wanker.' That 96K he just donated?

Its easy to dnote to charity when he gets charitable wages. Obscenely charitable wages.

He has played his whole career through quite possibly the worst period for England national football.

But like some daft scouse ex pro said on the radio today, he has been a superb and loyal servant for england.

No 'lovely lovely person' will recall Gerrard in 30 years time when the recall all of their favourite players from years gone by.

You do know that in terms of how we have done in tournaments to call it the worst period for national football is utter shite right ?

well lets look at the facts shall we?

But please always bear in mind that this is the era of the golden generation.

2014. Group stage and utter utter garbage.
2012 QF. Thoroughly out played by an aging Italian side.
2010. last 16. ABsolutely embarrassed by germany.
2008. didnt qualify
2006. QF. After playing shite all the way through

Now thats the golden generation. So surely the expectations were higher?

OK, we failed to qualify in 1994. When we had to suffer Graham Taylor.

But 1998 wasnt bad. Robbed by Argentina.
2002 wasnt bad either.

Euro 96 was good.

Italia 90 was good.

86 was good.

82 wasnt bad.

74 and 78 were bad. But only because we didnr pick the best players. and it was harder to qualify.

so yes, i am comfortable with my view.

You are calling them the golden generation to try and build a false equivalency

You stated this was the worst period in English football, I am saying if you look how we had done that is untrue , as you point out the 70s were much much worse, as were the mid 80s

Which superstars would you have put in the England team instead of Gerrard?

2004 lost on pens

1986 quarter finals but with a poorer record than 2006 which you claim is shite

1984 didn't qualify for Euros

1988 lost all 3 Euro group games

Statistically you are wrong,

1. I strenuously disagree. Gerrard always did a job for England, not only always in his best position. I recall him playing on the left on a few occasions. Played a lot more good games than bad.

2. That comment hurt me Andy D!!! :crying-yellow: You :naughty: boy :)

Whilst I agree with most points dibble makes I think it's very cringey when people say golden generation as if the players give themselves this mantra. It was the media of course, not the players fault anyone give them that title.

Anyway, carry on

I haven't watched every single one of his appearances for England, but I think I've seen all of the ones in major tournaments, and a fair few qualifiers.

As Mad John said, he never seemed to step up to the plate when it came to playing anyone half decent.

Very good club player, and I think he won more caps than he should have on the strength of this. He's done the decent thing by announcing his retirement (or someone at the FA has by telling him to announce it).

you really think these players didnt use it to further their bank balances?

Of course they did.

And as they are the highest earners of all england teams, inflation accounted for, they should have performed better.

but they didnt cos they are shite.

I never thought he looked himself in tournaments, maybe he liked being the main man and adored like he was at Liverpool, maybe Liverpool was the problem, from about 2004-2011 he pretty much carried them 50/60 games a season, probably took it out of him, I always thought he looked leggy.

When there was always that conundrum of playing him and Lampard in the same side, Lampard should have been given preference. He didn't pull up many trees against decent international opposition either, but he seemed to be much steadier than Gerrard for me, and chipped in with a lot of goals. More of a winner for me too, especially when Chelsea were unplayable in Mourinho's first spell at Chelsea.

players like gerrard AND lampard are the reason england never win owt.

Lampard was never international class but has a superb goals record.

Gerrard always gave the ball away too often. And his so called long passing range caused as many problems as chances.

if people continue to consider these two to be class players we will never succeed.
FACT.

I must be wearing my Rose tinted specs when I speak of Gerrard. IMO he always did well for England wherever he was asked to play! Played his position, did his job, never as flamboyant as with Liverpool, but did what he was asked.

well take the bloody things off.

I guess Gerrard must have been missing from the games when englands midfield got embarrassingly outplayed over the last 100 games then?

So if Gerrard always did his job well, I would love to know what that job was.

Oh, and he was utter bobbins at this world cup. Maybe you were away for that.

Here's an interesting fact, Gerrard has a better win per game ratio for England than any other 100+ capped player.

In a thread with the words "Stevie G" and "international football" in the title, I'd say it was pretty relevant.
Although you could always go off topic and start spouting about David Moyes I suppose.

Gerrard has been one of the finest club footballers of his generation. Anybody who suggests otherwise needs their heads looking at.

It's also very easy to criticise players for "not doing it for their country" but it's a flawed argument, Messi and Ronaldo haven't consistently done it for their countries but nobody would say they're not world-class players. I'm not putting Gerrard in their league but you get my point.

I make Gerrard England's best player in three of the five tournaments he's been involved in. Yes he was a bit shit this summer but he wasn't helped by this team's shape one bit. He was far from the worst though.

Suggesting we should have given preference to Lampard during that time when they supposedly couldn't play together is laughable. 2003-2009 Gerrard was at his peak and peerless at times.

He is a cock though.

He even rates his own career for England as 6/10.

I think Messi would rate his international performances as 6/10 compared to what he achieves with Barcelona.
Ronaldo would probably do well to score a 3 with Portugal.

I guess you didn't see Ronaldo for Portugal against Sweden last year ?

He got them to the world cup pretty much on his own.

someone has mentioned Messi and Ronaldo in a thread about Gerrard. :laughing-rolling:

That reminds me of something.

Quite a lot of people are claiming that Messi cant be described as a true world great unless he wins the world cup.

Yet thet dont mention this about Ronaldo.

And if it IS the case then does that make George Best shite?

Ronaldo was injured.

And shouldnt have been there.

Gerrard was shite and shouldnt have been there.

Gerrard is a whining scouse ponce, Ronaldo isnt.

Ronaldo is a world great, Gerard isnt.

I think Messi would rate his international performances as 6/10 compared to what he achieves with Barcelona.
Ronaldo would probably do well to score a 3 with Portugal.

Both have nearly 1 in 2 records at International level. Messi 42 in 94 and Ronaldo 50 in 115. To rank someone who's scored fifty goals at International level at 3 out of 10 is a little bit silly.

George best got 9 in 37 international appearances.

Klinger must think Best was utter shite.

Not at all.
Then again I'm not the one saying a player who has won 114 caps for his country is actually shite and not of international standard.
