Even if you don't have any documents there'll be a way to trace them. Don't go with any third parties though, they'll cream off a ridiculous amount of commission.

Good luck, you could be quids in!

You're best bet is to contact the bank itself, as has been said, don't go through a third party as the process is an easy one. As far as the timescale, I believe there's no hard and fast rule and it seems to depend on the individual finance company.

They will send you a questionnaire, and then contact you and ask a series of questions, make sure on both, you say you felt pressurised and the person who sold you the loan said you probably wouldn't get the loan if you don't take out the PPI, and also throw in they said it was the law you have to take out loan insurance (PPI) ..

You shouldn't need the documentation, as the bank should still hold records of the transaction, they have 8 weeks from your claim to give you a decision, if your not happy with what they say take it to the financial ombudsman...

Good luck and don't forget my pint...

We've just recently made a successful claim from nearly nine years ago from the Halifax, basically had a loan and paid PPI for four and a half years before realising it wasn't necessary and cancelling it, didn't do anything about it till we found the paperwork while clearing some stuff out (you can still claim without any paperwork). Whatever you do don't use any of the companies that advertise on tv, we did it by initially phoning the Halifax, got a form to fill in which took about 20 minutes and sent it back with a copy of the original agreement where no mention of a cooling off period was made. I was expecting around £600, got a cheque after about five weeks for just under a grand, they add 8% per year interest.
Well worth having a go, it will only cost you a phone call and a stamp and you will save 30% - 40% by doing it yourself and not using a company.

Same here. was clearing the Kitchen cupboards out last year before our new kitchen got installed, found some paperwork from 10 years ago, realised we had PPI on my Car Loan, claimed it back ourselves and it paid for half of the new kitchen!

There is always a chance, nothing ventured , nothing gained.

I did it myself years ago, I then started doing it for others for a 10% cut. Got a few people a decent chunk of money back and made a nice little bit for myself.

Much cheaper than using these 3rd parties.

If you had a successful PPI claim, it should have included interest - which could have been subject to income tax. You may be able to claim back the tax which is deducted.

"After much back and forth, HM Revenue & Customs has confirmed that interest on PPI refunds can be included as interest under the PSA – so you’ll only need to pay tax on it if it pushed you over the £1,000 threshold for the year (if you’re a basic-rate taxpayer).

However basic-rate tax will be taken off your PPI payment automatically, so if you’re still within your PSA limit YOU WILL NEED TO CLAIM BACK THE TAX using form R40 (or form R43 if living overseas). Similarly, higher- or additional-rate taxpayers will need to declare the extra income (just the statutory interest, not the other parts of the refund) to HMRC to ensure they pay the correct tax."

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/recla ... -insurance

If you used a claims company to get the refund, ask them for a breakdown of the payment itemising the tax deducted - if they didn't provide one in the first place.
