On a similar note I didnt realise if you smack a penalty against the post in normal time and put the rebound away yourself then it doesnt count. Sure iv seen players do it too.

this happened in tranmere leyton orient game a couple of weeks back.

it's because the same player can't touch it twice in succession. otherwise could tap it forward and then shoot again.

It also has to be the player who puts the ball on the spot who has to take it.

Looks like that's in a penalty shootout, I thought if the ball came back away from the goal either from it hitting the keeper or the post it counts as a miss in that situation?

Me too but...

"A kick is successful if, having been touched once by the kicker, it crosses the goal line without going out of play or touching any player other than the defending goalkeeper. The ball may touch the goalkeeper, posts, or crossbar any number of times before going into the net."

Penalty usually missed in pen shoot out when ball stops going forward, ie save, hits post etc, however one in a million when balls loops backwards like this counts.

It was actually a shoot out in the Italian play-offs not a cup tie
It's described in detail towards the start of the book 'the numbers game'
As an example of the role randomness plays in football
