Piece of string.

How much do you want to spend, what will he use it for, how old is he?

So he's 17/18? Does he already have one at the minute?

yes but its a bit slow so I am told. I just want to know what to look for spec wise so that it works quicker than he has now. I dont know the spec of the one he has now before its asked. I am just struggling to understand what represents a fast laptop.

I think that you need loads of cores and a big ram.

Get him one that makes Football manager unbearably slow or he will do fuck all homework and ruin his education.

Have you tried just putting more RAM in the laptop he's got already? Myn was running slowly and was starting to piss me off and I was considering buying another however I put an extra 3GB of RAM in and now it's like a new laptop (check how much memory the laptop can hold first mind you)

Did you put the extra RAM in yourself or get somebody to do it? I'm considering doing that with mine

Look maybe thats very good advice, but I dont think it would make a good xmas present. I alos have no idea how much ram he current one has got, or what speed the processer? is either. How much ram does a decent laptop need and does the the long numbered thing matter?

I imagine Yubep will be your best chance of a serious answer. Or telling someone in the shop your requirements and max spend (so they dont try to flog you the most expensive etc)

I got it done at the PC place just round the corner from Joannas, I'm sure you could do it yourself if you followed Youtube videos, just didn't trust myself!

I asked in Staples before for a big standard laptop good enough to play Football manager at playable speeds and tit about on the internet and he gave sound advice. Was also only about £220 too.

It would but for another £50 in the same shop you could get double the HD space, double the RAM and touch screen.

My experience of HP is that they are perfectly good laptops but the build quality of the case/body/whatever it is called is shite. Given the way that teenagers lug laptops around I'd go for something a bit more robust even if it means a slightly out of date graphics card.

Whats the point of a touch screen unless you can take the screen off and use it as a tablet like them new ones on the advert?

My advice is to test the ones you are interested in by hoying them against a wall about five metres away, ejecting the DVD drive a couple of times and slamming it back shut with a half-pound hammer, pouring a goo-laden drink through the ventilation slots, then seeing if it works the next day.

I am being serious.

When you have an idea what spec you want, this site gives an indication where you might find the best deals, http://www.hotukdeals.com/tag/laptop, worth a look

Any laptop from between 225 to 300 quid will do. To be honest you might get better value for money (or 'bang for buck') from ebuyer (www.ebuyer.com) usually free delivery too. I got a laptop there a couple year back with a 400 quid spec for 280 quid. Wasn't branded but doesn't matter. If your son is just titting round on the net literally anything will do even a net top.
