Wish I had such understanding bosses, although as I only work until 2 and with the forecast of rain you mentioned, I could get their in time! Pity Chris is a Yorkshire fan and not likely to go along with the idea!!

Durham dont seem to be getting the credit they deserve for this seasons efforts. Looks like they're going to win it at a canter, which at the start of the season was'nt being forecast.
As a Durham lad I do enjoy how Radio Tees are now extoling the virtues of both Durham and Yorkshire, after years of completely ignoring the former.

I grew up in County Durham as a lot of us did and have been watching Durham since I was 13 and they were a minor county, Ive even been and watched the seconds play at Seaton Carew. First game I went to was against Lancashire in what used to be The Benson and Hedges Cup or was it the Gillette, cant remember, the one where the Minor Counties sometimes got to play big teams. Was at The Racecourse in Durham and you could watch without paying to go in through the gate.

I go whenever I can, which is obviously difficult given a lot of County Championship games are played during the week when I'm at work.

I used to make the odd comment about them on here, but stopped bothering when it was clear nobody else was particularly interested. My brother was at Canterbury in 2008 when they won the title for the first time, with it being a Saturday I was at Leicester I think watching Pools.

The second time they won it I was again at Pools , again they wrapped things up on a Saturday.

I go 3 or 4 times maybe a season, the same as I go to watch Gateshead Thunder, quite enjoy going to rounders on a Saturday and the Rugby League on a Sunday. Used to go a lot more to the rounders but its a bastard getting back since they scrapped the 231 bus, takes forever now.

Does it make me a glory hunter because Id like to be there when they win tomorrow ? Dunno, define glory hunter . Just seems a bit shit for them if they get the runs in front of 4 men and a dog, and its not that far from work so thought Id make the effort.

He was clearly taking the piss chip. Chill out!

Considering they were tipped for relegation they have done extremely well. Onions seems to be taking wickets for fun

And Rushworth; he's got 50 for the season. The biggest surprise is Borthwick as he only needs a few more runs to make 1000 CC runs this season.

It was just crushing defeat after crushing defeat following Durham as a kid. It's superb that they've managed to win the 1st division championship twice (soon to be three times) in 6 seasons. With a lot of home grown players to boot.

Owwwwww muuucccchh???

That was my impression of a Yorkshireman.

Brilliant achievement by Durham, the most satisfying of the three for me. No overseas player, 9 out of the 11 today have come from the academy with 7 of them North East lads. I'd be interested to see who they beat today, Notts, wage bill in comparison.

Superb for Collingwood as well, it would have been easy for him to just retire after England. He'd probably made enough money but he didn't and he's came and give something back to Durham, not that a really owed them anything. The form since he took a relegation bound team on as captain in the back half of last season has been brilliant. An absolute model sportsman and top professional.

they have to produce local players to compete. There's simply not the income from attendances that many of the other counties can generate.

I went to Durham Johnston school for 2 years and back then the only people who seemed to get decent cricket coaching were the millionaire's kids who went to Durham school.

The title would have been even more of a cakewalk if it hadnt been for that daft declaration against Yorkshire at the start of the season an all.

No doubt the young uns have stepped up to the mark big time. Like The Fat Man says probably the biggest revelation has been the batting of Scott Borthwick, really didnt see that coming I have to say. Durham have always produced a stream of good bowlers but this is the first time they have had so many really good home grown or Durham Academy developed, young batsmen.

I only now see Durham at Edgbaston (and now and again at Grace Road) but this season shows how players develop. I always thought Borthwick was a bowler who could bat, and Stokes as a batter who could bowl. This season, those roles have reversed.

I agree entirely with the comments on Colly. He's been influential in picking young kids (such as Buckley) and promoting Borthwick.

I don't really think it has anything to do with school playing fields more the strength of club cricket up here.

The NYSD and the NEPL are two of strongest leagues in the country.

Do state schools play any cricket?

Clubs like Hartlepool, Seaton and Blackhall coach and give competitive cricket to hundreds of kids every week in this area.

I don't think the likes of Phil Mustard, Paul Collingwood or Graham Onions (or Scott Borthwick or Mark Stoneman ect) came from privileged backgrounds they just grew up at their local clubs. Around here cricket is very much a working class game which probably gives Durham a bit of an edge compared to other counties.

Keep your eye open for a local lad Paul Braithwaite a big friend of jnr. and graduate of Seaton Carew CC could be making an appearance with the big boys soon.

I've heard one or two good things about him too.

Well done to Durham despite all the odds - no money, no overseas player, points deduction etc.

The one game in years I couldn't get to as well.

I was in London yesterday so couldn't get to the game. Got the train back last night, switched the radio on in time for the 9.30 news on Radio 5 Live and - no mention of Durham winning the County Championship. Presumably it rated a mention on a couple of bulletins in the afternoon!

It's probably got more to do with the way the ECB has fucked over the county championship schedule to fit in the pyjama tournaments, but the sense of anti-climax that Durham have won it (again) will have played a part.

The Times yesterday referred to Durham as 'perennial overachievers!' As an exercise in damning with faint praise that's on a par with one of their writers who described Paul Collingwood in his England heyday as a 'blue collar cricketer.'

Long may Durham CC and its players continue sticking it to the Establishment!

Paul Braithwaite has just finished at High Tunstall so he'll only be 16. Playing for Seaton Carew in the second tier of the NYSD League he has scored a lot of runs this season, several fifties and one century. He started the season at number three, but now opens the batting as well as opening the bowling. When Durham U17S won the ECB U17 County Championship at Arundel, Paul made 64. Hetton Lyons' Jack Burnham made 124, while Darlington RA's Callum Buckley took 5-7 with his off-spin. Durham seem to have some excellent lads coming through.

As well as being an excellent cricketer and footballer, Paul is a smashing lad with his feet firmly on the ground. One to watch without a doubt.

Speaking of The Times reminds me of an incident at The Vic quite a few years ago. It was on a Saturday in December and Pools were the only North East team to be playing that day. I believe it may have been an international weekend or a FA Cup day. Think we were playing Leyton Orient or another London club who were going very well at the time.
With the lack of games to watch the journos, including a few London ones descended on the Vic. Typical December day, pissing down, wind howling around and bitterly cold. Press box absolutely chocca and because of the adverse weather the front was kept closed as long as possible and the electric fire was doing its best.
At around 2.50 the Hartlepool Mail reporter at the time, who shall remain nameless, opened up the front for all present to see the magnificent Vic playing surface and the magnificent view beyond.
At this point a Hurray Henry who was working for The Times at the time retorted from the back of the Press Box: "My, my that is a big river."
"That's not a river, that's the North Sea you daft ******" was the Mail man's reply.
And from that day onwards I have had no time for The Times or anyone who writes for it.

if people have to have their opinions formulated by newspapers... what they think after reading one is irrelevant

Those people are in fact completely irrelevant, and their existence is pointless (no matter how wealthy they think they are)

The only relevant irrelevant person is Mr Irrelevant

Lucky enough to get the afternoon off work & see DCCC claim the title. The U17 squad won their competition too. Despite all the financial difficulties DCCC have shown the local footy clubs how to get the best out of local talent. Great coaching & set up in place thanks to Geoff Cook who has done a sterling job & is on his way back after his recent heart attack. Agree with comments about some of the local leagues. My 9 year old has joined the U11s at Sedgefield . Cracking coaching & set up & barely a hooray henry in site. Been watching some some 1st team matches & have been impressed by the standard. DCCC/The Ashes/local cricket has been a pleasure to watch this season & Compo- get yerself to some rugby league matches -not bobbins- one of the best sports in the world. Usually far more entertaining than your average footy match & I don't just mean Pools.

Speaking of local cricket Seaton first team got promoted to the NYSD Premier League today, an absolutely brilliant achievement for them with basically every single player who has come through the clubs junior set up at some point.

Our first team will have a local derby now not the seconds who got promoted to division 1, but Blackhall stayed up so that's a a good game for 2's next year hopefully I am fit enough to play, mind after missing the full season injured we got promoted so I might have to have a look at the thirds fixtures!
