Voted for Sweeney if fit. Obvious doubts but would avoid breaking up a central defensive partnership that is developing well, would avoid playing Poole in a role he isn't suited to and would avoid Walton doing the same job as Dolan. If your best attacking midfield player isn't available but you're happy with the overall shape of the team why not just pick the next best?

Our success against Bradford was because we had midfielders wanting the ball and they were receiving it. Bringing Sweeney back in means we will just by-pass the midfield like against Wycombe.

He has to have a midfielder who can pass and receive the ball alongside Dolan and it cant be Walton.

Our success against Bradford was down to James and Monkhouse playing blinders, assisted by wingers Franks and Compton.
Although they had decent games, the centre midfielders played well defensively but didnt really get forward too much on the night.

I actually went for putting Collins back in, paiful as it would be. We have to get a grip of the midfield... and in any case suspensions almost always disrupt centre back pairings over the season anyway

The most important thing is to have some movement and ability in the centre of the park and Dolan and Baldwin would give us that

Hopefully though Walker will make it and this will become irrelevant

Sweeney would only be any use if we are pumping it over the other team's heads... so maybe he will get one, maybe two opportunities to see the ball and if he fluffs the chance(s) if it/they come(s) then he doesn't touch the ball for the other 89 minutes and 45 seconds, then we've played with 10 men again (or the oppo have played with 12 if you like)

We need to put footballers in midfield, and we have that with Compton, Franks, Dolan and Walker (or Baldwin if Walker not fit)

We are at home to the bottom club and we need to dominate possession - the only way we will do this is to field players who can pass/control/retain the ball between themselves

I agree.

The only other possible option is Austin at centre back and bring Holden back into the team.

It really does highlight how thin our squad is outside of the best eleven when we're struggling this much to replace a 17 year old.

yup. Worryingly people are saying play Sweeney!!

Do they have eyes?

and if so, which way were their eyes pointing the last 50 times they've watched Sweeney play?

I've got good enough eyes to know that if your central defence is basically sound its a good idea to leave it alone, particularly for a crucial match. I'd start with Sweeney because if he is fit, and Walker isn't, picking him causes least disruption to the system Cooper is trying to get the players to play. If it doesn't look like it is working I'd push Baldwin up to midfield in a 3-2-3-2 formation with Poole playing behind the front two- his best position from what I've seen.

Start with the system you're training for then play players in their best position. Simple way of working.

Anyway, anybody calling for the return of Sam Collins can't criticise anybody else, about anything, ever.

i'm more worried that there are just as many willing to play a player that goes missing just as much as Sweeney, out of position in central midfield.

at the moment i'd take sweeney over walton

we dont need to play 2 defensive midfielders at home, we also shouldnt play poole out of position, i wanna see poole upfront n closer to goal not miles away where he cant be as effective, if he was in centre mid he'd have to track back n he'd be wasted doing that.

Might have a point there but I haven't seen enough of him to comment beyond thinking it might not be a bad idea.

If he was going to make one up he should have at least gone for something unusual like a spatchcocked ringpiece.

Absolutely, that is why Cooper made him captain- because he didn't fit the system, can't cope with passing and won't be getting picked.

not quite. But I get your point.

I was thinking that an unfit Walker, on crutches, is still a better option than some listed.

A fine satirical position to take but who would you pick if he broke his crutches during the warm up?

Opted for Sweeney. Poole would be second choice. Collins and Walton not an option, would rather play an injured Walker!

It was a lesser of four evils I think - I just had images of him galloping from box to box like the old days and popping up with 10 goals a season....

Who knows, maybe they will unveil our star new signing in a surprise press conference tonight and he will get the nod.

I don't know which of the above is the most dreamlike!

A midfield 4 of Poole, Compton franks and Dolan sounds frighteningly lightweight

I suspect James will be dropped with Poole playing behind Howard and Dolan and Walton sitting in centre mid, assuming walker doesn't make it

As someone pointed out the fact an injury to a 17 year old plays havoc with our line up shows how badly off we are, and it's driven by the fact several senior pros are shite

Because Poole scored last week, I am not saying this is what should happen as have not seen to comment, just what I suspect cooper will do
