a petition on Facebook last night, for a state funeral for Drummer Lee Rigby, I signed it. But would it be a good or bad thing at the moment, would it inflame the situation, or put two fingers up to the extremists who want to stop our way of life in our country?

When you consider the MoD's attitude to it's servicemen, I reckon it's shouting into the void meself like.

I don't think he should have one.

It was horrific, but was also a random attack and we don't give state funerals to those who die in war.

Added to the fact it will be used by extremists to increase tension.

It's a very complicated thing to decide one way or the other, but I'd say not.

Lee was the victim of a ghastly crime. But so have other people been the victims of ghastly racial and religious crimes in this country. We can't have state funerals for all of them. It's not really what state funerals are for.

Arguably state funerals have been for not very much, in many cases, being a monarch and that sort of thing, but they've not been for the victims of crimes.

No from me, it would be used by the wrong people to increase tensions.

The poor lads funeral shouldn't be about that.

The lad who asked me is a friend of one of my sons, who is currently serving in Afghanistan, so felt obliged to sign. As Spender has said it would never happen, and probably is not the right thing in the current climate.

Would he not be given full military honours as a funeral. I apologise if I'm wrong having never served in an armed force. I'm not quite sure how it works.

I thought they only get one if killed in action.

That is correct Mr United, but it's not a state funeral, it's a military one if killed in action. It is optional, depending on the desires of the immediate relatives. State funerals are for Monarchs or extremely high ranking Government ofiicials.

A dignified, relevant funeral for the drummer please.

A massively supported family funeral would send out a much more powerful message.

These Facebook things are well intentioned, but surely it should be down to his wife and family to decide what arrangement they want, not the general public ?

The family of Prime Ministers and Royals will be used to being in the public glare , I cant imagine anything worse than grieving for a loved one while having hundreds of cameras in my face every time I appeared in public. How many times do we hear the phrase " the family would now like to be left alone to grieve in peace "made after a tragedy ?

Chip I don't agree tht they are well intentioned. People are using such situations merely to get as many 'likes' etc as they can imo.
