I mentioned this in another thread and it got me thinking.

We have wasted a lot of money - either in transfer fees, wages or both - on a lot of players recently.

Behan, Yantorno, McSweeney, Boyd, Kyle, Luscombe, Nish, Parker, Mackay, Donaldson...

The list goes on and I'm sure you could add to the throng of obscurity and mediocrity.

But it begs the question...why?

Is it poor scouting? No scouting? Poor choices by management?
Poor communication between the staff?

I dont think its just our club who do this, I think you will find the majority of clubs go through players like this.....

signing a player at our level, mostly rejected by other clubs always carries an element of risk, for every dimi n porter you get those above.

One of the few players we had who had pace and could control and run with a ball. Something were badly missing.

I've heard this question before and I'm sure one of the answers is Jordi Cruyff, Spanish Passport holder wouldn't have got anywhere near Man United's first team without his old fella!

Can I just clarify that non of us would have amounted to much in life or in fact anything at all without at least one decent ejaculation from our old fella. But if my Dad was Johan Cruyff I reckon I'd put that on my CV.

Its not just buying players that we seem to struggle with. We dont typically do well in the loan market either. How many times do we see other league 1 sides with decent loan signings who look head and shoulders above the rest of the players on the pitch.

Rarely.

League One loan signing's are normally young lads from Premiership and Championship clubs. Name one recently, the better sides don't rely on loan players. One in ten probably make an impact.

Roy O'Donovan made sure we didn't get relegated a couple of seasons ago so I'd say on that one alone we've done OK.

I also think it's more to do with comnections in the game at the top level clubs etc... Turner/Cooper/Wadsworth do/did have them but only occasionally has it got us what we needed at the time.

Merson got some cracking loans at Walsall on the day they beat us 3-1 at home to almost scupper our play off chances.
Alhtough P[ools were below par, players like Joachim and Surman were simply too good for us that day.... bizarre that they were even at a mid table league one side with nothing to play for admittedly, but almost certainly if Merson hadn't been their manager then they wouldn't have gone there in the first place
