...the sane Norwegian who murdered 77 people gets 21 yrs imprisonment.....?

....this is a 33 year old guy, who the judge has set a minimum of 10 years inside against. So lets say for good behaviour (and if proved not a threat stpid )...he could be out aged 43?, well that really is a punishment that is sctatchinghead , what's that under 2 months for every person he murdered?

Wouldn't like to think he was sitting next to me on a european flight in 15 years time ...would you?

Why dont you read the case verdict again, "He was convicted of terrorism and premeditated murder, and given the maximum sentence of 21 years' imprisonment. However, that can be prolonged at a later date if he is deemed to remain a danger to society. "

This is the maximum sentance he could have gotten and he will never get out after this time and will be prolonged.

....so why did the judge set a minimum sentence of 10 years then? sctatchinghead

Maybe what Breivik thinks is that the politians of his country are the danger to society.

Correct. The judge did give him a sentance of 21 years and your reading that it as gospel and thats all he will serve he will never get out.

In the same way (on the flipslide) that people who get life in this country dont always serve it. However people like Brady, West, Shipman, Huntley and Sutcliffe will all die in prison. The sentance doesnt always mean what it says on the tin.

Because it's the law in Norway, he's been given the maximum sentence the judge can legally impose, but a 21 year sentence can be indefinite in the individual is a threat to society. Heard a Norwegian law expert on the radio earlier who said he will die in prison.

I know that, but to quote the judge "she imposed a minimum sentence of 10 years"........under what conditions would he be able to justify release after this period?....thats what I'm asking?

They probably have to by law, you can't change the laws of the land for one person no matter how much you'd like to!

Ronnie Biggs got 30 yrs for his involvement in the GTR.....so that sentence seems a little light to me.

I think the person not getting the gist of anything is you. You are not getting the gist of law. The judge must set terms and minimum tarrifs as this is the law. This doesnt mean he will ever get out!

Half of them commited suicide so it's a little hard to use them as examples.

This happened in another country where law is interpreted differently.

Isn't the Ronnie Biggs thing like saying young Mohammed lost his right arm for pick pocketing in Saudi Arabia so young Dwayne's conditional discharge for nicking a 42" plasma from Comet in Hackney seems a bit lenient!

You don't even have indefinite life sentences here do you? Everyone has the right to apply for parole after a certain amount of time. I suppose we have multiple life sentences that basically mean life. If that isn't in Norway's laws though they can't impose it! Maybe they'll review this on the back of his crimes. The reality is though if Breivik had done that here or in Norway the result would be the same, he's going to die in prison. Hopefully as a demented old man.

Im at a loss here, what has an English train robber got to do with a Norwegian mass murderer. Two different countries and two different penal systems
But in the case of Biggs he stole govt money hence the large sentence.

Come on Paulus, how can you compare an English train robbers sentence and the one handed down to a Norwegian mass murderer.

Not comparing them like for like, just dont see how you could ever really consider a parole on a bloke who's murdered that many people and isn't insane. So why include the little softener in the summing up. Just seems quite ridiculous to me.......I'd of gone for H.D.& Q. for him.

With Biggs he robbed the mail train I believe and the GPO was ran by the Government, and if you Robbed government money you got long sentences.
When I was a postman we had a female postIe who delivered around Elwick, her girlfriend lived in easington road. Jimmy Krankie threw the rem money over her fence. First offence and she was jailed.

[quote="Chip Fireball"]So you genuinely believe that in 15 years time Brevik will not only be freed from prison, he will be allowed to board European passenger jets, armed with sufficent capability to bring them crashing to earth.

.........yes.

Breivik will never, ever, ever get out.

Not if he keeps making statements like he did in court today.

Lacking remorse, thumbing your nose at the system and celebrating your crimes are a sure fire way to guarantee you never see daylight again.
