They'd probably 'prefer' not to go public but in reality are left with little choice. Journos from every paper are probably knocking on the door/ phoning the house.

It probably gets to a stage were it's easier to just do the press conference and a few interviews with some papers and get it out of the way. You can't keep such a massive win quiet

I'm hoping this is satire...

Really obscure, surrealist satire.

I wouldn't go public, I'd buy a big house in an area full of big houses, then why would anybody question the money I had. Ok friends and family might find it a bit strange, but I'll probably tell them I've inherited a decent sum from a long lost relative.

It is a difficult one.
I think it all depends on how much you won.
£1m would be a lot easier to disguise than these mega jackpots on the Euromillions.
Friends and family would notice the difference very quickly and then you face the question of coming clean or lying.
If it was me who had won the £148million I would want to get involved with Pools and that would be extremely difficult to disguise.
I would certainly want to enjoy the windfall and help a few people so it would probably come out that way. A secret is safest with one person. Once two know it is no longer a secret.

I don't agree with what's been said above.

The only person I'm aware of winning a lottery jackpot and being named is that rapist who won £7m whilst on parole or day-release from prison, and I assume that's only because it was a bit hard for for him to deal with it whilst being in prison and someone from HMP said something.

Other than that, I have never come across another non-publicity lottery winner being named.

How many people who have won in excess of £100 million in the UK have elected to remain anonymous ?

That gadgie from Coventry (?) who won earlier in the year was hounded, even before he claimed it. I'd be on the blower to Camelot saying 'I'm in Barbados, bring the cash over here.' There was even pictures of the shop where the ticket was bought.

That bloke from Nottingham was the same.

On a different note, some bloke won the equivalent of 54 mill here the other week and he appeared in front of the press in a panda mask and then vanished!

Don't know but are winnings of <£100m not of interest to spongers, shysters and con-merchants, then?

It's a sign of the times that lottery wins of £6 or £7 million simply arent newsworthy on a national level anymore unless the winner themselves is newsworthy, like your convict. The fact you cant quote any examples of anyone winning " megabucks " and remaining anonymous, wheras a bloke living on the other side of the world can provide examples of folk being virtually outed before even going to collect suggests how hard it is.

What will someone who won £148m buy that they wouldn't buy if they only won £40m?

Will their Bugatti Veyron be 3.5 larger?

If I won 148million then I would happily share the wealth around a bit. Once you have 4 or 5 nice houses around the world, a few cars and a few other bits and bobs you are probably still going to have 128million accumulating a lot of interest each day. Like has been said there is no chance that you are going to be able to keep it quiet - and I wouldn't really know why anyone would want to. You could make a huge difference to peoples lives around the world and I would rather enjoy doing that than live in some sort of fear of people finding out.

You might get some begging letters but I'm sure you could pay someone you like £50k a year for spending an hour each day to read your post.

That wasn't the question was it ? The question was why do people who win staggering amounts of money, like that those that have just won £148 million, go public.

People expressed the view that should the media decide the win was big enough to be newsworthy then whether you told opted for anonymity was to all intent and purpose irrelevant, as you would be outed anyway by a press that would deem the story of national interest.

For that reason you may as well announce the win on your own terms than have the press do it for you .

If a winner really wanted to keep it from going public, they could. They're not forced to tell anyone.

I note that it is more likely that someone without a pot to piss in before the win will find it difficult to hide it but it would still be their failure.

If I didn't want it to become public, I wouldn't tell anyone (family or friends). Could I do it? I believe I could but, there again, I'm not that much of a material person.

I don't really think, IMO, it's a question of telling anyone. I just think it would become obvious.

Us human beings are by and large cut from the same cloth and if £148 million suddenly appears in our bank accounts it's natural that your tastes will suddenly change.

Your friends might suddenly start to ask why you are now driving a top of the range Porsche or have packed work in for no apparent reason.

But then again you've said you're not a material person.

One couple seem to quite enjoy reading the begging letters. Didnt they just send some kid from round here off to the States to get a new leg or summat after hearing about his plight ?

I think they did pay about 8k for a lighter better designed leg for the lad so fair play to them.

Mind you it would be interesting to see somebody try to do it just to see how long it would take for their cover to be blown.

It would actually make an interesting basis for a TV drama when you think about it. Has anyone else read Lionel Asbo by Martin Amis ? Brilliant book.

Can you show me a news article of someone who has won say at least £20m, where they asked for no publicity, didn't evidence their win and were still put in the papers?

Jesus Wept, yr like a dog with a fucking bone. Like I said, and I dont know what part of this yr struggling with, people wouldnt bother going down that route because they aint dim enough to think they could keep the press from finding out.

Like Spender has stated, the press have no issues publishing a photo of the street and shop where the winning ticket was bought, even before the gadge had come forward to claim his prize.

You yourself have even given an example of a convict being outed by the press, but no evidence of a massive winner electing and maintianing anonymity. Thats because everyone who has won a staggering amount has elected to appear in the media.

If you are convinced you would be the first man in history who could keep a £148 million lottery win completely secret, and that nobody would ever find out it was you, not even your own bank, then great. Presumably you would be paid in cash in used notes and keep the lot under your bed .

This bone has an awful lot of meat left on as you're not very good at stripping it.

A quick search shows that someone won £22m in March and remained anonymous. Someone has won £46m on Euro Millions and remained anonymous. First links from page 1 of a web search.

So, I ask again, as there are people "who go down that route" can you show me a news article on an outed anonymous winner?

Also, why are you going about 'my bank' as if I'd deposit a £143m with them? Do you think winners walk into the bank carrying a 5 foot cheque asking for it to go into the same account as their salary? There are banks/financial institutions where integrity and discretion are key, and you won't find them on the High Street.

Do you not think that the rapist would have had many possibilities of sources who outed him, what with him being in prison and that?

The lottery wins you mention aren't news, £148 million has a huge press interest as it's one of the largest of all time.

The shop owner where the guy bought the ticket even sold stills of the CCTV footage of him making the purchase to the papers!

According to some, anyone who chooses to remain anonymous doesn't actually remains anonymous as the papers still pick them up.

I'm waiting for someone to show me evidence of this. The £22m winner in March should be easy to find, no?

And thats normally the case, you know the amount, you know the country, but I cant ever recall anyone winning in excess of £50 million in the UK and remaining anonymous.

How laughable!

Plucking a £50m limit out of thin air as if £46.4m just doesn't cut it.

You're a joke, Furball.

Other than that, I have never come across another non-publicity lottery winner being named.

How many people who have won in excess of £100 million in the UK have elected to remain anonymous ?

I have an answer now: one - an anonymous person won £113,019,926 in October 2010.

I await your next act of squirmery.

I'd build us a one like the new rotherham one.

The Yubep stadium.

Lightning tree is banned instantly.

A special seat would be built on the roof for mutley, and a booster seat for compo in the stands.
