HARTLEPOOL COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE

Date Set for Referendum
A REFERENDUM will take place in Hartlepool on Thursday 15 November to determine how the council is run in the future.

It follows a meeting of the Full Council last night (2 August) when councillors voted unanimously in favour of a Referendum.

Hartlepool Council has operated the Elected Mayor and Cabinet model since May 2002 and voters will be asked in the Referendum whether they want to retain this system or see it replaced with a committee system. The ballot paper will ask:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How would you like Hartlepool Council to be run?

By a mayor who is elected by voters. This is how the council is run now

By one or more committees made up of elected councillors. This would be a change from how the council is run now

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Referendum will be determined by a straight majority but any change to the current system would not be implemented until May 2013.

The Referendum will be held on the same day as the election to appoint a Police and Crime Commissioner for the Cleveland area.

Press release PR17099. 3 August 2012.

Issued by Alastair Rae, Public Relations Manager, on 01429 523510.

This isn't specifically about Drummond though, is it. It's about people having the option not to have political party dogma govern their every move.
They never imagined for a minute people were going vote for someone who wasn't a party puppet. As it happens, the person who disillusioned them was the chap in the monkey suit.
And the people seem to like the new situation since they've given the parties the V-sign on two further occasions, with the Labour candidate coming a very poor third in 2009. This referendum is all about the parties wanting their toys back.

I'd sooner they kept it as it is with Drummond as the Mayor.

I really don't think it makes a huge jot of difference which way the vote goes. It's just all a daft game for most politicians.

Whoever the mayor is they are going to be doing all but bot all and seemingly they have little or no influence. Someone like Ian Cameron or Gus Robinson might have had more success in the position but who knows..?

It's a fact that they hate the idea that they don't have total control, so all they can try and do is change the situation until they have.

They know the electorate will basically vote Labour and the Mayor will always be Drummond because he has more supporters around town than they have in their wards so they're trying to oust him by changing the system.

It's typical Labour, like when they changed the voting boundaries nationally.

Vote Mayor or you'll get royally screwed. Think John Prescott. bbolt

Exactly.

And they will get their way eventually.

And we will be left with a backwater town where nothing ever happens, and weekends like the Tall Ships will evetually go down in folklore as the good old days.

Is Drummond running again like if this vote goes in his favour?

Also on a side note and not wanting to talk ill of the dead but Gus Robinson was one of the most arrigant and odious people I have ever met.

Which is probably what it takes to do the job. A ruthless, successfull business man who actually cares about the community. My Nana used to live in Romaine park which is right next to Robinsons yard ans he used to be very good to the locals. Allowed them to park their cars in his locked car park during times of high car crime in the area, a place for kids to play with a basketball court etc. My nana couldnt speak highly enough of the bloke.

Fair enough but I speak as I find and also a story my dad told me about him while he was working for Best supported this.
