It's a bad night for football in Hartlepool. I just don't see how the area can recover from this.

This just 24 hours after Hartlepool FC's 7-4 drubbing of Peterlee.

I hope the team got something out of the game, although I doubt it. It can only have been a money making exercise imposed on Cooper and his team, whether they really wanted the match or not

Catch 22 for Pools though, a chance to make some money but for football reasons it's not the best preparation for the season's first competitive game in 4 days time

Some of the Geordies at work seemed to think that Newcastle wanted to use the game to have a look at Luke James

we should sign bigrimani, awesome that kid, ripped us a new one about 10 times.

The game was exactly what you'd expect, top class premier team, fast, great passing, good movement, against a league one side, tried there best but fell short, howard looked canny n james tried a bit.

First time i've ever seen ameobi look graceful.

I cant really judge anyone on that tonight, it wouldnt be fair, if i did evan horwood would never be allowed on a footy pitch again.

It looked men against boys for the likes of luke james and poole, too lightweight against a big lad like williamson

Any one of them fringe players from Newcastle would do, some of their passing and movement was class.

Did that quick winger who did his hamstring when on loan with us get a club? Cant even think of his name.

Does anyone remember Newky dicking us two years in succession in pre-season in 2003/4 and 2004/5?
Remind me where we finished.

Nish is all but useless. I would honestly rather we gave Larkin a contract for a few months than have to endure half hearted performances from him in the near future... Also remember Monkhouse is a striker

It was possibly a game for Murray and Walton to start this one. Newcastle carved us open time after time. I will focus on the positives though Luke James did well at times and so did Holden who really has to be knocking on the door for a start.

Steve Howard has done well in the friendlies but when the season starts he needs to be more of a goal threat. Lastly I really hope Luscombe gets his shit together, he had a few bursts when he came on.....

Last night was embarrassing, very hard to watch when we are that bad. Our back 4 and flinders must have thought it was a 7.45 Ko because that 1st 15 minutes they were simply ball watching. The number of times we were carved wide open by a Newcastle reserve side is very frustrating. 5-1 could have been doubled if they wanted to. A thought franks finally showed he can beat players and in the 2nd half beat santon time and time again. For me he was 1 Of very few positives. Only pre season and serve as a much needed kick up the arse but if we defend like that again well be at the wrong end of the table. I still dont see were our goals are going to come from, we can play down the right but on the left we are poor. We need strengthening in that position for me. Howard did well again outside the box but apart from the Sunderland goal in it he's had no service whatsoever. James worked hard but to little effect. Poole didn't have a bad game and luscombes cameo again was good. Would have liked to have seen more of young wignall but I'm sure his time will come. To be out of the match after 11 minutes though is just wrong and to be 2 down after 3 minutes must never happen again

Newcastle would have turned over any div1 club on that showing last night imo. We aint going to up against that sort of opposition in the league next season and should look a lot better with Howard winning everything thats in the air. Still a bit weak in the goalscoring dept though. This season may be a bit soon for the likes of James and Poole.

I'd hardly call it embarrassing, to say it's newcastle reserves is harsh, they may not all have been first teamers, but they were premiership class all over the park.

Yubep please explain (friendly or not) how being 2 down after 3 mins and 3 down after 11 mins at home Isnt embarrassing??? It might be harsh calling them reserves but how many of the 11 players from there side that started will start the season?? Maybe 1. That was supposably our first team and the opening stages were IMO extremely embarrassing. Yes they were good but how easy did we make it for them. The space They had on the ball out wide was scary. It was as If we were playing 4 centre backs. when shola ameobi rips you apart you know theres something seriously wrong.

When people are paying money to watch there team they don't want to see an opening to a game like that, weather it's league cup or a fukn friendly. To be out of the game before the 12th minute is just a joke. Had banter with the Geordies at work all day and by kick off was really looking forward to it and couldn't wait for it to start. Within 3 minutes I wished I'd stayed at home

I wasnt embarrassed cos they were a frigging good side, reserves or not it's a premiership reserve side.

Taylor n Williamson have premiership experience and Steve Harpers been around forever.

Ameobi's scored goals in the nou camp and as for the second half sub they brought on, ben arfa, do we need to say anything about him?

As pj said, it's hard worth getting a strop on over a pre-season kick about.

How come when we beat a strong side that Sunderland put out people dismiss it as 'just a friendly' but we get stuffed a few weeks later against a similar strength team people start self harming? sctatchinghead

There is a select few ( ritchies birthmark included) who are seriously over playing the defeat.....various people have mentioned how we were 2 down after 3 mins... Do you honestly believe that flinders wouldn't have clattered Ameobi for their 2nd in a competitive game?

From last season they had 2 first choice defenders playing, another came on at left back, 2 summer signings in midfield, Ben arfa came on, Ameobi who up until January was their 2nd choice striker and for all weaknesses of a prem striker is about 10x better than any striker we will play

There has been enough in the displays to suggest improvement on performance and entertainment this season is achievable so lets not get too downbeat and bak the lads to hopefully what will end up a successful season

I thought Newcastle were excellent, and to be honest they should be, I haven't looked it up, but that team will be worth tens of millions. I don't care if it's not the team they start with on the first day of the Premiership season. Man for man that's how a Premiership team verses a League One team game should be.

For all they were excellent, it just goes to show how poor Sunderland were on the night of there appearance at the Vic. If Newcastle play like that all season (they won't), you'd expect them to do very well. If Sunderland play as poorly as they did all season (they won't), you'd expect them to really struggle.

Pools, well, I'm confident we'll do ok, it's hard to judge when all I've seen is games against opposition from the Championship and Premiership.

One thing that does worry me a little, Neale Cooper seems to have all his eggs in the one basket. I see why he's stuck to the same line up, familiarity etc, but I'd like to have seen more game time for James Poole especially. I'm not sure Luke James should be as far ahead of James Poole as he appears to be.

To be honest whenever we have played Premiership teams in Cups etc, Collins has always been a complete rock imo. I think we will have missed him badly.

How am I over playing a defeat?? When I pay money to watch my team play I dont expect the game to be over in the 11th min. Who does??? I understand it's just a friendly but I hate to see us lose and that opening last night hurt. I can only speak for myself but I was gutted, 0-3 after 11 mins, I dont care who were playing that's just terrible. It worried the Fuck out of me how shambolic we defended with our 1st game just 4 days away. It could easily have been alot worse.

Apperently though there a premiership side so everythings fine

One thing last night's game highlighted is how narrow we play. We play with next to no width at all. Franks did very well second half to turn there fullback inside and out, then when he turned round to lay it to Austin he was still stood next to Baldwin in defence.

Numerous times we get it out on to one wing, one or two quick passes through the midfield and if one of our fullbacks was hogging the touchline on the opposite side, he would have acres of space to run in to. Newcastle did this a number of times last night and looked like scoring from every single one. Holden did this when he came on, but with Monkhouse being nowhere to be seen, he had no one to link up with.

I'd like to see Holden start at left back, and move Horwood to LM. Will certainly add the much needed width. And if possible, sign a new RB, with a bit of pace (someone like the RB for Stevenage)

Id rather we got a sound beating. You learn more from a defeat than a win plus if we had won/got a good draw then the players could become complacent after decent results v Boro and Sunderland too.
