Billy Ayre was the scariest man to ever play professional football.

He was here, there and everyfookingwhere and he looked like a cold-blooded killer from a spaghetti western. Good combination for a defender.

Billy Ayre was one of the toughest players we ever had at Pools. A good bloke though who was well respected wherever he went. I remember him playing for Mansfield at the Vic after he had left Pools and we were giving him a load of abuse in the town end at a corner. He put his fingers up in the shape of a 1-0 as they were winning at the time - we beat them in the end though I think.

Depends which of these games it was.

http://www.inthemadcrowd.co.uk/cgi-bin/ ... p?oid=3040

4-1 win

http://www.inthemadcrowd.co.uk/cgi-bin/ ... p?oid=2970

0-4 defeat

He scored in both.

That 1984 game..I think I'm right in saying that all 22 players were "Free Transfers", quite a rarity in those days.

It could well have been that 4-1 win. All four Pools goals came in the second half after Mansfield had led at the break.

It must have been that 4-1 game - I remember we turned the tables on them after they had taken the lead - although I couldn't remember the exact result. I just remember shouting to Billy Ayre - so much for your 1-0 lead now.....

Went to see steve kindon in the corner flag many years ago and there was a photo of billy ayre on the wall and kindon said this guy was the hardest man he had played against and kindon was a big man.

Bob Newton always said the same thing and although he was a hard man he was also well liked wherever he went. He died just over 10 years ago and although he wasn't a superstar Billy is still fondly remembered by football fans throughout the country. clappp

Wasn't around for the Newton Era but I always remember what my dad said about him.. My dad used to look after a pub in the town (can't remember which one) and Bob used to go in and say "I'm only having a half, I've got training tomorrow".... He would then go onto having 16 halves..
