Watched the first 'Twilight' last night, have to say it's probably one of the worst films i've ever seen, like something on channel 5 during the day or a extended version of one of them stupid series on living like charmed or buffy or angel or summit like that.

Terrible in every way possible.

Oh god really? I thought they would at least improve, i'll probably have the rest on this weekend so it'll be a right bore fest.

Really cant understand what the fuss is about with these.

Edward Cullen wasnt even that dreamy.

That is one of the worst films I have ever seen even so I turned it off.

Watched Band of Brothers again on TMF the other night the second episode of that series is brilliant.

not a bad fillum, obviously an interesting story with the whole stat thing, a bit of the baseball terminology went over my head and the best way i can describe pitts role in the football world would be the director of football, signing player but not picking the team.

Watched this last night...one of the finest films I've seen for a long time. Gritty realism at its best, a fantastic portrayal of the mentally unhinged from Bruce Payne, and Liz Hurley looked mighty fine as the tart with a heart.

Wesley Snipes was top-class as the hero, I wouldn't mind him saving the day if I was on a plane that had been hijacked by a bunch of psychopaths. Marc Macaulay, in particular, sent shivers down my spine with his fantastic emotionally-driven performance as Vincent. Without wanting to give too much away, his transformation into the murderous paramedic was totally unexpected and showed his fantastic acting ability to portray the character with such finesse.

The film was a roller-coaster from start to end, with no clue as to what would happen next. I was literally kept on the edge of my seat, as the tightly-driven plot offered no clues for the following scenes. Unlike many other action films, this was a tense, well-written masterpiece that featured incredible acting; I strongly recommend this film to anyone else with the intention of watching a timeless classic.

10/10

I was really looking forward to watching this....

Image

Very disapointed with it....should have been at least another 2 hours long....never went into any major detail about the main events....(her getting elected as MP and then PM, Miners Strike, Falklands, Riots, 70's Strikes, Unemployment, Poll Tax, getting Stabbed in the Back etc etc....the only mention of Milk was at the bery begining when she went to the shop!!!! confised )....one plus was Jim Broadbent as Dennis....plus I thought it was a bit insensitive showing her with Dementiawhile she's still alive....(yes it might raise awareness etc but.... confised )....no wonder her Family wanted nothing to do with it....I'd rather it have been from her early years through the end of her career instead of going backwards and forwards in time etc....it could have been so much more....4/10....Gutted!!!! sadx sadx

No! Build up the suspense. You don't want to be the bell-end at work who accidentally ruins it for everyone by forgetting which episode they're up to.

Walter Hill's Southern Comfort? With Keith Carradine and Powers Boothe? Great film, didn't know it was on.

No idea, didnt recognise any actors and some of the acting was quite poor. Bunch of soliders being killed off by some hillbillies?

Must say it had me thinking that the mexican/spanish/puerto rican guy (one of the two survivors) was going to be in on it and helping the hillbillies out. All that stuff about suddenly being switched to "this chicken shit outfit" etc etc Kinda felt like it was going to lead somewhere but didnt.

Also the nooses and all the sacrifices at the end again had you thinking it was for them etc suppose good writing that you never know whats gonna happen.

Was one of them films i didnt think was very good but at the same time i couldnt stop watching.

Been ridiculously busy with work for the last couple of months, but I have managed to squeeze a few filums into the gaps between work and sleep. Here's my thoughts on a few...

The Tree of Life
Wow. This looks stunning, and I do mean stunning. Every single shot in the film is beautifully framed and photographed. But it is one honkingly self-loving piece of filmmaking, and ultimately collapses under the sheer weight of its own pretentions. Stern demanding father (Brad Pitt) and saintly earth-mother (Jessica Chastain) are remembered in flashback by their surviving son (Sean Penn). A pretty bog-standard film decorated by some lovely window dressing. The universe explodes beautifully into existence, life begins, dinosaurs rule and develop a sense of morality (oh yes), people live their essentially unimportant lives, mistakes are made, differences are reconciled, and the universe continues on its majestic way. If the dinosaur scene doesn't make you laugh out loud then the ending will. Terence Malik is a director who unashamedly wears his heart and his beliefs on his sleeve, and this is a very very very easy film to mock. Maybe he caught me on a bad day, but I mocked. Others will love it.

Melancholia
In its own way this is every bit as self-important as The Tree of Life, yet I enjoyed it a lot more. It starts and ends with the end of the world, destroyed utterly by a collision with the rogue planet Melancholia (metaphor alert!) In between we have a new bride (Kirsten Dunst) barely able to function socially due to crippling depression. It's told in two parts: the wedding day, when Dunst's character is starting to unravel and new star has been spotted in the sky, and then a little while later, with the "star" recognised as Melancholia and getting ever closer. Not overlong, held my interest throughout, and a career-best turn from Dunst.

Bluebeard
I love this sort of shit. Classically grim French fairy tale gets the old-fashioned art-house treatment from Catherine Breillat. Lots of slow movement, bright colours and still camerawork, it reminded me of those French films that used to show up on late night Channel 4 but without the nudity. Story’s as old as the hills: impoverished and recently bereaved woman lives with her two young daughters in a rural village, overlooked by a castle belonging to a fabulously rich recluse of evil repute. Word comes that the blue-bearded ogre will bring riches to the household if he is allowed to take a daughter for his latest bride. The rumours suggest his previous marriages didn’t end well. Arty, slow, knowingly up its own arse, I enjoyed it.

13 Assassins
I love shit like this too when it’s done well, and Takeshi Miike delivered this in style. Miike is perhaps best known for the ultra-violent Ichi the Killer and the gruesome ending of Audition. He goes for a more restrained style here, though it’s not without violence (it’s a samurai film FFS). The story is again as old as the hills. I believe it’s a remake of a little seen 1960s film which in turn borrows heavily from Seven Samurai (tiny band of committed warriors fighting against overwhelming odds to right a wrong). It probably could have done with being 15-20 minutes longer, just to expand the characters a little. Ludicrous plot of course, but featuring a wonderfully sadistic villain and it finishes with an outstanding 30+ minute battle scene. Recommended.

Tyrannosaur
The only Des Hamilton I was previously aware of was the bloke who played for Bradford and Newcastle. Anyway, one of the first things I did after watching this superb film was to look up another Des Hamilton. He was the casting director for Tyrannosaur, and for the original short film of which it is an expansion. Whether it was solely his decision to cast Olivia Colman, or whether it was Paddy Considine's, or a combination of the two, it was a seriously imaginative piece of casting. I only knew Colman from her work in comedy, particularly Peep Show. It seemed a curious choice to cast her in such a role. Peter Mullan and Eddie Marsan are always reliable. I expected a quality film when I saw they had leading roles, but I was troubled about Colman. I needn't have worried; she was magnificent, hopefully a real career launching performance. Mullan was predictably superb. It's hard to sympathise with a bloke whose first act in a film is to kick his dog to death, but he gives his flawed character such depth, such a sense of a life hard lived, that you're fascinated by him. Marsan is wonderfully repellent. An impressive directorial debut from Paddy Considine; I hope there's a lot more to come from him on both sides of the camera.

The Help
Not sure what to make of this. Some of the performances are outstanding, particularly Octavia Spencer, but it wasn't held together with any believable narrative. The whole thing is essentially a sugar-coated account of race relations in 1960s Mississippi, and demonstrates that the black folks will get up off yo dem asses and speak up for themselves if only a nice, principled, privileged whitey lady will show them the way. The audience will nod smugly to themselves, say "weren't we ghastly but aren't we so much better now". Fine performances. Spencer is great, as is Viola Davis; the pantomine villainess is suitably pantominey and villainish. But it's a TV fillum at heart; will be loved by people who bought The Blind Side on day of release.

Le Quattro Volte
OK, this really shouldn’t have worked. An Italian film with no dialog that begins with a shot of a charcoal heap and then shows the story of a soul’s transport from human to animal to vegetable to mineral as it follows the life and death of an old goatherd, a young goat, a tree and another pile of charcoal. It’s a bizarre concept but a surprisingly warm and joyful film to watch. It really was quite lovely, and there are a few scenes that leave you scratching your head wondering how the director managed to shoot it. Excellent stuff with star turns from dog and goat alike.

You know when you get those trailers that say "From the people that brought you (successful film)", in the hope that they will get people to go and see their latest film by association. Well the poster for this one should read "From the people who saw The Bourne Identity and thought it was good". So many plot points have been lifted it's difficult to know where to start. It's not terrible, in fact it's an entertaining enough film. It just doesn't need to exist. The only worthwhile exercise was spotting how many stars of recent European classics were wasted in too-small roles. I spotted Sebastian Kock (The Lives of Others), Karl Markovics (The Counterfeiters), Stipe Erceg (The Edukators, The Baader-Meinhof Complex) and of course Bruno Ganz (Downfall), who at least got some decent screen time. Mutley may have spotted others. I can only assume that Julia Jentsch and Moritz Bleibtreu were busy.

I'll post a few more when I can be arsed....

Cheers for those Mr.John!!!! clappp clappp

Now have you watched 'Once' yet???? sctatchinghead

Well get your arse into gear!!!!

Anyway....just watched this beautiful and magical thing....

Take a couple of minutes to read this review....(btw....why can't I write reviews like this or MadJohn's???? sadx )....and then watch the trailer....

A couple of positive reviews kindled a desire to try this little film out. After it became apparent that it wasn't going to appear too soon in any local rental establishment, I took the plunge and ordered the disk. This turns out to have been one of my very best DVD acquisitions - and if you get a copy, you'll be delighted to own it, too.
My wife was reading when I first put it on: this was actually my strategy to avoid getting blamed if, on telling her to watch it, it turned out as obscure or inaccessible as it might at first sound. She did actually ask what I was going to watch as I loaded it.

"Er, it's a little film about some Mongolian herders in the Gobi Desert and their camels, Dear..." I offered sheepishly (and not inappropriately).

"...right..." she hemmed, returning to her book. The film started.

As the credits rolled some time later, I turned from my riveted position facing the TV. My wife was staring wide-eyed at the screen, a huge smile on her face, moisture in her eyes.

"That was absolutely fantastic!" she exclaimed.

It is. Far more beautiful than any of your over-hyped Crouching Dragons, or whatever - deliriously so, in fact, and all the more exquisite for being so real. Simple and exotic at the same time, The Weeping Camel establishes how utterly alien we all are and, at the same time, how very, very similar.

It begins with astonishing, eyeball-searing landscape and lifestyle shots that look like Luke Skywalker's home planet, with creatures from Hoth imported from the sequel (were they Bantus?). The desert looks and sounds bleak, wild, glowing and glorious. Its inhabitants (and their clothes, their habitat, their food, their songs) are both ordinary and inexpressibly glamorous.

Not too many minutes in, though, and you realise that this family is just like us; only more in tune with the humans and animals with whom they cohabit. Although the central tragi-comedy is that of the abandoned calf, the story is very much about how the people live and where they might go (the young lads are campaigning for a television when they aren't crossing the desert to fetch batteries and a violinist) - and, ultimately, about the poetic, magical, musical treatment the family finds for its ailing fellow-creatures. The depiction of the forsaken calf's plight is as poignant as the very best of Disney (and actually far less manipulative). The resolution: well, you need to see and hear it for yourselves. You won't regret it.

It really is a gorgeous piece of work. And what a nice technical surprise for us, too. Having treated ourselves to digital widescreen and fab surround-sound in the Christmas aftermath, we were busy going through the spectacular back-catalogue (Gladiator, Star Wars, West Side Story and others) to "justify" the home cinema spend. Guess what! It's the Weeping Camel that makes the best sense of giving cinematic craftsmanship maximum domestic reproduction: the pictures - of a landscape with little intrinsic variation - are endlessly gorgeous. The soundscape is just awesome: the unending wind, the interior acoustics, the cries of the animals, Odgoo's (the mother's) song to her sleep-creaky daughter, the music (including violin-strings played, Aeolian Harp-style, by the wind through a beast's fur) - utterly brilliant. Inside the tent with the family, the recording is so true that the dogs and goats sounded as if they were outside the room in which we were watching (itself also swept by that constant, fluting, roaring, raucous wind).

Everything you see and hear, everything that happens - you wonder (and rejoice) at how such artists were there with perfectly-placed cameras and mikes to help us look, listen and share. Such a simple little film, such stupendous cinema!

You've probably gathered that I can't recommend this highly enough.
Rob (Amazon)!!!!
