Don't mean to be pedantic here, but which 0-3 Friday night defeat was this?

Do you mean the 2-3 Tuesday night match in 2005?

I only remember because I 'followed' it from a Cybercafe in Dublin.

You must know the 'alleged' stories about his socialising in Hartlepool.

Yes!! Very different. Cooper did things to other peoples wives 'Allegedly' how true this is i dont know!

Newell was just a general piss head IMO! I also told him that too, hence the altercation we had inside 42!

No Mr BP I was at that one as well. This was away, we parked in one of them scary sidestreets with pink and yellow and lime green doors. All the shops seemed to sell was toilet rolls, there was heaps of them on the fronts. Steve Howard got a far post header just before half time after we'd played them off the pitch and got nothing.

I think at the time of us (blowing) this 14 point lead the crowd were particularly harsh towards newell. Considering he is one of a very few managers to get us promoted and remember it was him who built up the 14 point lead the treatment of him wasn't very nice at all, in fact at times it was very embarrasing.

Also, if someone came up to me in a nightclub calling me a pisshead and not being very nice about it I think i'd have a go back.

The guy wasn't that bad, I think he did a good job at pools, he had the respect of the players and I for one hope he gets another job in footy.

Could this have had anything to do with his demise?

Speaking after Tuesday's 2-1 home defeat to Hull City, the ex-Hatters striker demanded answers with regards to the sale of the likes of Carlos Edwards and Rowan Vine.

"Where's the £9million gone?" said Newell.

"Give that to me and I'll get five experienced players in, I'll pay them fortunes and we'll get ourselves out of it.

"It takes three or four years to build a reputation as a decent manager and three months to lose that reputation. But if you take the four best players out of any team it will hurt them.

"Give me the money and I'll replace them - but I can't.

"The reason we're in this position is because we've sold our best players. Someone should investigate what's going on at this club."

I call him a piss head for a reason, I was actually watching pools on the big screen and was gutted with how poor the goals where that we let in and the chances we missed, and after watching it, i shook my head in disbelief, and he had hold of me and tried to 'nut' me so i obviously retaliated and pushed him away and proceeded to call him a piss head. Thats how I justify myself

Still don't think he was a bad manager, he got us promoted and he had a good record at Luton until they started selling off all their best players. Also he wasn't afraid to speak up (as in the bung enquiry) but maybe being outspoken coupled with his teams bad form lead to his demise.

I'd certainly welcome him back in the future but i'm not sure many on here would, we've certainly had far worse!

I agree we have had worse, but my own opinion of the fella will never change.

Just hope he never rejoins the club in any way shape or form.

Think that Elvis C would rather see Arthur English, from your avatar, as manager than MN. Even allowing for the fact he has been dead for 12 years rolfl

Newell did an unbelievably good job with that luton side.
remember they were in administration when he took over and they stormed to promotion. when he had his best players they were pushing for the play offs, but the club have sold his best players and he's seen very little of the money.
He's been sacked for what he's said about the board. whoever said he won't get another job in football is way wrong.
I didn't like what he did at pools either but I can't believe he deserved to be sacked after the job he's done there.

I said that because he is far too outspoken.

He did well to survive his comments about the female linesman. I would be suprised if anyone touched him with a barge pole, why don't you think anyone took a chance when he was doing so well with Luton?

The Luton fans have been saying that he achieved his success with a team built by Joe Kinnear, since this team has broken up his side has been found wanting. He has still spent a couple of million this season. This may be fickle on the Luton fans part, but judging by 606 on Tuesday night a lot of the supporters were sick of him.

I would say Tubby did the groundwork that got us promoted, MN merely managed to lose us the 14 point lead that should have seen us promoted as champions

Plus he had the personality & charisma of a slug

A bit of a myth, when Newell took over we had a lead of about 3 or 4 point lead and initially we got very good results under his leadership.

I think he is unlucky to lose his job, his CV will still make impressive reading......

    No

The official line was that his contract was not renewed

So why do you guys hate him so much

Its a bit like Colin Lee at Walsall wanted to speak to Plymouth over a job , never got the job. He came back to Walsall and our chairman sacked him.

We then had Merson and the football ended for 2 years

Agree about Luton they are another team who seem to live on past events . Their ground is shocking on a par with Barnet and Accie stanley if you have been. They only reason they went up last time because they has 3 class players Curtin Davies, Berkovic and Howard the forward . Walsall out played Luton twice when they won the league but lost to a a harsh goal in the last minute at their place

Got nothing against Colchester , we stayed in the Championship for 3 great years , it was amazing. We did have the chance to push on but out chairman lost his bottle. instead of going for the play off we went down and down.

Steering clear of anything that might get a solicitor's letter (after all, he now has a bit of time on his hands to look around), although Newell deserves some credit for the promotion he came across as stunningly arrogant at times and never really won us over. Tactically he was also sometimes lacking, and that certainly didn't help.

For example. The game at Kiddy. Hendo had a nightmare, but when Eifion came on as a sub it wasn't for Hendo - fans boo in disbelief. Eifion grabs the equaliser, and Newell effectively said in his comments that he'd shown the fans they were wrong. Er, hello? It wasn't who came on (Effy was leading scorer after all) but who came off! If instead he'd explained that Watson (I think?) was tiring, needed fresh legs, no problem. But he didn't.

Then away at Wrexham, their three in centre midfield running the show, our two outnumbered. He's got the players who know how to go 5-3-2, we'd done it for much of the previous two years, but he didn't change it. We lost.

Newell didn't sign a single player in his time at the club. Therefore it's impossible to say that the side had much to do with him. It was Turner's team, mostly using Turner's tactics, and when it started going wrong Newell seemed unable to do anything about it.

He quite possibly will find other jobs, but I suspect he won't get anything at the top table. He's too much of a loose cannon with his comments on female officials etc. Next stop Leeds would be my guess!
