It'll never go away for Argentina and its more than a great political points scoring statement - although it that too.

They learn about their percieved injustices over the islands the way that kids learn about Jesus, its drummed into them from an early age and it stays there. They have two national passions; 'Las Malvinas' and football, and they are in that order. This will never go away and their narrow defeat in 82 just adds to their obsession.

'Cristina' as they all called her, not Kirchner or Fernandez, just 'Cristina', is rapidly becoming a new Eva Peron and shes doing a fine job of building bridges with those that matter. Thankfully shes also rebuilding their economy into something stable. It's about time someone did, the people of that country has suffered for decades because of political and economical incompetence. I was there in 2002 for a couple of weeks and I loved it. It was a touch surreal for the first couple of days but the people I met there couldn't have been more warm and welcoming.

As for James Peck, his nationality is a matter for him. I knew his dad, the legendary Terry Peck (google him, the man is a legend), and Terry was hugely embarrassed by his son but quietly proud of him for sticking to his principles despite being ostracised in the Falklands.

I believe that the Falklands will indeed be handed over at some point in the future, not in my lifetime, because while there are veterans and faimilies of the war dead still living no politician would countenance an agreement. It will happen though, probably through a 99 year leaseback arrangement.

Its the oil that has brought the focus on the place. The war was not about oil but this current heightening of tension most definitely has been brought about by the black stuff.

I thought that it was too difficult to get it out of the ground anyway? Not my area, you'll know better than me.

Possibly why IOR are subsidising the current season ticket offer.

To be honest, there's more important things to debate at the moment then the Falklands.

In the Falklands some people see his son as a traitor. Bollox I know but feelings still run high.

Theres three:

Don't cry for me Sergeant Major, No Picnic by my old boss Julian Thompson and Razor's Edge by Hugh Bicheno. The first is funny as a funny thing and captures military black humour perfectly but still remains factual and Razors Edge is the most insightful and accurate thing written about the conflict. Thompson's book carries the most weight as he was the commander of land forces.

Stay away from complete bollox like 'Green Eyed Boys' and 'One side of hell'

Don't know whether you've seen this review before Mr.I but it's a goodun'....

"For some reason, even though this book was written by my father with Bob McGowen, it took me 22 years to read "Don't Cry For Me" in full. I can remember watching his reports on the television as an excited 4 year old and telling my friends with pride where my dad was and what he was doing. Naturally at that age I did not realise how fortunate I was to be able to keep track of Dad's events on the television. I can only guess now how harrowing it must have been for those families whose father/husband/son was fighting in the conflict.
I was amazed how much of his stories I had forgotten, but they came back to my memory with ease, in particular being in Southampton to cheer home the Canberra (they should never have scrapped that ship in my opinion). Certain parts of the book I remember seeing on TV, including the British family who harmlessly came down to praise the Marines en route to the Falklands, only for their daughter to get the brunt of their chants. Other bits he never told me about despite my constant enquiries. Reading this book explains why.
Dad made a lot of friends during his time at the Falklands and it is heart warming to learn how fondly he is remembered by them. Some of the names mentioned in this book are very familiar. The men who went to war against Argentina in 1982 have since been thanked for their efforts and achievements on many professional levels, but I would like to use this review to thank them personally for making such an impact on my father's life. There was never a moment he spoke of any of you without feeling a certain amount of pride that he was there, despite the amount of practical jokes he was subject to! God bless, Dad."

Not the second one Mutters but I remember Bob McGowan down South. You'll enjoy Don't cry for me Sgt Major, its a giggle a minute read.

Incidentally; the 'practical jokes' consisted of putting body parts in his backpack.
