I see an EU ruling over competition has loosened Murdoch's hold over football. How long before pubs all over the country are showing games at 3pm on Saturday.. Will this effect our attendances ,I suspect not but hopefully it will cut down on the money slushing around in the premiershit..

discuss

is this about the landlady who was using a foreign provider instead of sky and said she should be able to use who she wanted to provide her television instead of sky who have a monopoly,or is it something completely different

It'll affect the Premiershit first off as Sky won't pay so much for the rights if any other bugger can show them for next to nowt.

Then, as always, the result will filter down to our level and below. Less money in the game from telly, less money in the game from people paying on the gate, more clubs going busto before the players realise that they need to lower their wage demands.

so does that mean its only a guide and does'nt have to be adhered too, also i don't think the government will wear it as it could undermine the licence fee

The licence fee won't be an issue, they charge it on equipment that can be used to receive signals so any TV ownership means you have to pay up. I can't see that many people who might fancy going to Pools wanting to go to the pub to watch Premiershit matches instead, not with commentaries in French, Swedish and no ads plugging matches in advance. Any loss of income is bad though.

Main thing will be Sky will have to think about how much to extort from pubs when they have a choice of going elsewhere, not sure how much of their massive profits that generates though or how much it would cost a UK pub to get something like Orange from France. UK matches are all on subscription channels over here but they must be free to air somewhere if you can get a big enough satellite dish.

Sky will have to respond by either raising the prices for streams to non UK broadcasters or reduce prices in the UK. Whichever way it plays out the Premiershit is going to be less valuable to Sky. To be honest this opinion, coupled with the planned Uefa proposal for Champions League clubs to operate on a level financial footing could well stop the ludicrous and obscene transfer fees we have seen just this week. Its bad enough with kids all over the UK running around in Manure and Cheski tops - how must supporters elsewhere in Europe feel?

I think this is a good move for football in general as it will take money out of the Premiershit and may mean they will not be able to take up all the talent, only loaning fringe players to lower league clubs. Wages will have to drop from obscene levels.

The decision is good for football and therefore good for Pools - but the transition might be bumpy ride.

This is the bit that is going to be hard, a few more billionaires buy top or mid level premier league clubs to use as toys and they just end up with a monopoly on success and get a bigger share of a smaller cake.

Anyone know where you can find a list of these pubs that have the dodgy channels? Need it for tomorrow!

Going back to the original question, I think it's bad.
I agree that the amount of monies the Premier teams get from sky will reduce (as they'll have to reduce the amount of money they charge UK pubs to show the matches) but unfortunately the in the grand scheme of Skys global revenue from the premiership, this will be a relatively small amount.

Fans on a Sat at 3pm will have a choice between sitting in the warm pub and having 8 pints (£20 worth) or going to watch live lower league football.

I think that to most on this forum it would not be a consideration. It would be pools every time. However, for some other it may give them a decision to make

Another thing that worries me about attendances is the atmosphere. People go to live matches for the atmosphere. If there is none then they will be more tempted to stay in the pub and watch a match there where the atmosphere is potentially better. If I recall my favourite ever pools matches they nearly always involve a good pools following and normally a good opposition team following too. Without atmosphere crowds will drop. When crowds drop it hard to get atmosphere. It's a vicious circle.

Oooppps - slightly off topic at the end there

I think the ruling is that different agreements in different parts of the EU are the problem. So it'll just pan out like this.

1) Premier League decides to protect its revenue by giving one EU wide deal rather than several local ones.

2) Sky/ESPN win the new deal but have to pay a bit more for it.

3) They recoup the extra cost by putting up their fees a bit.

So as usual the EU interfers (on behalf of the consumer allegedly) and we end up paying more, or if you live abroad lose your premiershit coverage.

There is no decision yet; this is simply the opinion of the advocate general (an independent legal officer of the ECJ who writes opinions after the closing of the evidence but before the judges make their decision) which does not have to be followed by the court.
