Ponting is the last of the tough Aussie greats players of the last 20 years.

Although he's had a shocker this series, Australia will be weaker without him.

I honestly don't get all the hatred of Ponting.

Three times he's lost the Ashes (chortle) but every single time he couldn't have been more gracious in defeat. He never offers excuses or fails to give the opposition credit, his interview wit Athers this morning again was excellent given the extreme pressure he's under, and with the England support singing 'you're getting sacked in the morning' in the background. OK he has the odd thing to say on the field and he plays the game hard but he's captain of Australia would you expect him to be any different. He's also been a genuinely World class player for a long time, one of the very best around.

Is it because he looks a little bit like George W Bush? sctatchinghead

Spot on PJ! When you consider the players hes lost recently its no wonder they are struggling. If he was English everyone would love his attitude.

for once i disagree with you pj. i've always found to be an arrogant little twat, smug in victory and increasingly graceless in defeat. he has to say complimentary things about a victorious opposition, but his more unguarded behaviour (gary pratt, the row with the umpire) seems to reveal his real nature.

and its ian hislop that's his spit and pop

Seems like it's been going on for hours/days/weeks/months/yonks at least!!!! sadx

Weird....honestly that's what I think....

'Yeah let's invent a 'Sporting' Tournament that lasts 3 months between only 2 Teams....if it's a draw....that'll do....bad light....tough....rain....boring....etc etc'!!!!

At least the Boat Race only lasts 20 odd minutes*!!!! :coool:

*I expect a young person from the county of Kent putting me right there like!!!!

Great start and the Aussies are in real trouble now. I reckon we'll have that Smith out soon and then we can start on the bowlers :coool:

Colly has retired from Test cricket.

He has had a fine career for someone who was constantly written off and has gone out gracefully at the right time.

Couldn't agree more.

If it wasn't for Colly's knock at Cardiff 18 months ago we may not have gone on to win the series

There's no defending his scores this series but he's chipped in with a couple of important wickets and one amazing catch in Perth. He's been an important member in three Ashes's winning teams and captained the 20/20 World Cup team among many other accolades. Can't argue with that.

Great knock from Prior, he always seems to bat well when we're in a strong position, would be nice to see him coming in and staying round when the chips are down a bit more.

Colly is a legend.

Australia heading for a record 3rd innings defeat at home in a test series.

I'm getting sick of people damping down this series win by saying how pap the Aussies are.

Whilst they are probably rebulding after a few retirements, this shouldn't be allowed to make England's achievements any less credible.

Its a typical english trait. When we win its always because the opposition were rubbish. When the aussies were hammering us, the aussies never said it was only because engand were shite.

They revel in their glories, we undermine ours. Its an english disease.

I think its a good thing in many ways that we are so critical of what we do that we always look at the relative merits and weaknesses of our opponents. Fits in well with, IMO, a true British characteristic. Doing things with modesty and dignity. But I must admit there are times when you do want to scream when someone appears to be putting down a lot of hard work by saying anyone could have done this.

However, there are plenty of reporters about who have not stopped short of revelling in our emphatic win. Try the close of play podcast on the BBC website with Geoff Boycott. Its a treat

And we haven't just beaten them, we have absolutely buggered 'em. When we wrap up this test we'll have beaten them 3 times by an innings this series.
We've made them look like Zimbabwe or The Nolans because we've been so good.

Exactly right, Mr. Bramstein.

Quite understated, that's us.
