How about how well England played, and how good a side England are. The Aussies (apart from that spinner) are a strong side and we have just slaughtered them. One of the best England performances for a long, long time if not ever.

Piers Morgan is a prick. FACT!

Even if we win the 3 remaining tests at a canter, that was still one hell of a performance. He should stick to bumming Susan Boyle...shuddddderrr.

A superb win.

Beating Australia like this in a test match, in Australia, after years of experiencing pummelling after pummelling is very sweet indeed.

I hope they dish out another beating even more severe than this on the way to a comfortable series win. Still three games to go of course but come on England.

Morgan is clearly an idiot.

It's not too many days since Mike Hussey and Brad Haddin were twatting the England attack all round the Gabba. To suggest that Hussey in particular is no batsman is bloody stupid. He would also make most people's top tens of current best fielders in Test cricket. Michael Clarke would also be in that list, and Ricky Ponting would probably top it. All three are superb fielders. Ponting would also make an all-time Australia XI as one of the best batsmen ever to play the game. Watson and Katich are dependable openers, Haddin an excellent counter-attacking number seven. Marcus North is the weak link, but even he has centuries to his name in South Africa, in India, and in England (and Wales). Crucially for him he never scores in Australia, and that will probably end his career.

So it's a strong top seven. Admittedly it's not quite as strong as the top seven of a few years ago. Watson and Katich are not Hayden and Langer; Haddin isn't Gilchrist. But that old top seven is up there with the very best there's ever been. What they've got now is still very good, but they're batting under pressure against a confident England and with a toothless bowling attack that seems unable to exert the same pressure in the opposite direction.

For me their only top class bowler is Johnson, and he seems to have such a mental blind spot against England that he can't be trusted to play. The rest are good solid supporting cast but no more than that. Siddle bowled an excellent spell in Brisbane, but his record suggests that was unusually good for him. As Ian Chappell said, the opposition will look at Australian attack and see a bunch of number #3s lacking a number #1. Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee are better than what's out there, and Gillespie and Lee themselves were only the support act.

That's a great appraisal young John. I am in full concurrence with every word. clappp

Whilst it has been a strong top 7 on their day previously, they have an abundance of problems and it's a great time to play them. Ponting is out of the top 20 rankings for the first time in a decade, Hussey was very close to being dropped before the series, Clarke has been well out of form and injured, the openers are solid without being spectacular, North gets himself in then gets himself although Haddin is a very under-rated batsmen. Compare that to years gone by where they had Langer and Hayden opening (one of the best pair of openers ever), Ponting as number 1 in the world, Clarke was their top run scorer 18 months ago and Adam Gilchirst was their wicketkeeper/batsmen and I think it shows how backwards they have gone. Then of course there is the tail which added just 27 runs in the two innings this time round, you'd have fancied Warney or Lee to get that on their own in previous years. Yes, individually they have some excellent players who have previously amassed high scores but collectively they're a weak unit at the moment.

England are superb at the moment, you can't take anything away from them. I don't remember us ever being as strong in the whole time I've been watching. Excellent in every department and everyone on top of their games, what more can you ask for?

I'd be truly gutted if we lost even one Test this time round, we're streets ahead of them in my opinion and if I was an Aussie I'd be extremely worried about how that bowling attack is ever going to take 20 wickets. It's irrelevant what has happened previously, we're never going to have such a good chance to destroy them.

There are quite a few Poolies out there. Andy Mullen (Paul's Son), Ollie Mole (goes to loads of Pools Away games) and Goffy (young, not the gadget off the radio!) were all the the 2nd Test. Massive Seaton Carew CC flag was up all 5 days, and at least two other Pools flags. Picked Ollie out on HD the other nite!

Looks like Chris Tremlett in tonight then, widely considered a positive move which is something the Aussies are struggling to make. A couple of the Aussies struggle with the short ball so I bet they're delighted someone with his height will be launching balls at their head.

We've never had such a good chance, shame it starts at 2am. banghead

Aye, the Perth Test is always an annoying one (especially as we often get trounced). Looking forward to it, just hope that Tremlett can offer the control that Broad gave us in Brisbane and Adelaide as well as some aggression. I'm going to have an early night then get up to watch the first two sessions and listen to the third...

I'm working 2 till 12 tomorrow so not sure how to play it. Might get up for 7 and watch the last few hours.

They've come back a bit Australia but 179 for 6 is still a pretty poor position. Get them out for less than 300 and it'll have been another excellent day's work.

Micheal Clarke being the perfect example at that. I should have had money on Clarke getting him. rage

Tremlett has returned with great figues and as I said before it's something the Aussies can't do. They've brought in Hughes, Smith, Harris, Doherty and Bollinger who have all returned fck all whilst we lose a key player like Broad and replace him with someone who gets half of the top out.

I think Johnson will be dangerous here, and I also think it could be quite a low-scoring game. We will need to be careful early on. Our batsmen are in superb form but I would be happy with any reasonable lead. I don't think this will be another game in which we smack 500+

Yep, fully expecting Johnson to carry on his momentum from the damage he did with the bat on a pitch that will suit him.

350 wouldn't be OK but 420 should be the target.

Collingwood's catch was fantastic, I don't think we've got another player that could have pulled it off.

Johnson has been making a twat out of himself all morning. Firstly gobbing off at Jimmy who then duly clean bowled Harris five seconds later and then giving Strauss verbal. Strauss then walked off with Cook taking the piss out of the useless tart.

Good first day - the first hour or so of tomorrow will be crucial. If Strauss and Cook are still in at the first drinks break then we will be batting a long long time. The Aussie bowlers don't seem able of putting pressure on at both ends and their attack reminds me of when England had players like Chris Lewis, Steve Watkin and Chris Silverwood. They just haven't got the quality needed to compete at the top level...

The Aussies have wriggled off the hook a bit with that total but the pitch was getting easier and it looks like we could easily bat all day tomorrow and get another 500+ total at some point on day 3.

England right in the driving seat.

One good batting display away from securing the Ashes now. I strongly doubt Australia will have the stomach for a fight if go into their second innings needing a big score just to make us bat again.

Here's hoping for another good day's cricket.

Yes I noticed that the other day his action is very suspect same as that Sri Lankan bowler who plays in the IPL forgot his name.

I would hope Bell would be put further up the order. The first session tomorrow is going to be crucial. We can't afford to be chasing more than 325 really and with the way we played in the 1st innings that would be a massive struggle. South Africa chased down over 400 at Perth a few years ago to win a test - lets hope we have the ability and mental toughness to do the same....

Jonny of course we do it was one bad innings we showed in the first test that our batsman can stay the course and hold out play. I think if we have a good morning with the ball tonight we will win.

Concurrence with that chap. 3 wickets for less than 70 in the first session and it's anybody's game.

Recent history at Perth has shown that chasing high totals batting last isn't a problem.

England have shown already they can post high scores but having said that I would like them to get the Aussies out before they have a lead of more than 300.

He's about as far away from being a chucker that's it's possible to be, he's slings the ball. You can bowl side arm from an almost 90 degree angle as long as your arm is straight.

Great spell of bowling from Johnson, no two ways about it.

England are not beaten yet though. It will obviously be a lot harder for them now but the three wickets they have taken mean it is still very much game on. The key, as ever in this situation, will be early wickets. Even then a target of 350 needn't be impossible to achieve. Johnson might bowl rubbish in the second innings. It's not like it hasn't happened before.

Thanks for that...........I knew you wouldn't let me down
