If you buy a player for a million pounds on a three year contract then that contract is worth £27777 per month. The value is written down on the books over the life of the contract.

Its a bit like buying a car thats worth less every month as it gets older. You're ten grand car is worth eight grand after six months so you have to put the two grand down as a cost in the accounts.

Wow! so all the players we bought for nowt are now worth, after depreciation......

Um! nowt. I see.
