I know it usually only 5 but I got 6 , so posting them all

1. They the only team in the League with a day in their name. They were originally a cricket club and Wednesday was the day they played their matches. Having been formed by a bunch of butchers who had half day on a Wednesday and was only time they could play.

2. Ritchie Humphreys started his career there. Being described by Johan Cryuff as the next Marco Van Basten. He scored 4 goals in his first 5 games in the premiership for Wednesday.

3. Whilst playing for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Mark Crossley was sent off against Wolves(2000) after 13 seconds. The fastest time for a sending off.

4. The fastest shot ever recorded by a player is held by David Hirst while playing for Wednesday. It was against Arsenal and clocked at 114 mph. It hit the bar.

5. In 1980 Wednesday beat Sheffield United on Boxing day 4-0.In front of a record( for 3rd division) 49,309. Wednesday fans call it the "Boxing Day massacre"

6.Len Ashurst , Chris Turner have managed both Wednesday and Pools.

Did they just play other butchers or were there teams of gentlemen's outfitters, tobacconists and staymakers who also had the half day? Be good to know that there had once been a butchers only league.

Sheffield Butchers would be a better name than Sheffield Wednesday.

There were other types of craftsman. Though it was formed as the cricket club originally by butchers.

It was TQ why have I typed Crossley, he never even played for Wednesday I bet I got it off some S*** web page

The record for sending off has been beat as well (not in the league though)

In 2008 a player aptly named David PRATT was sent off after 3 seconds.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/7802865.stm

I like the quote from his then chairman.

""You normally won't meet a milder man, but David lost it."

After 3 seconds...F*** me what can cause a mild man to lose it that quick on a football pitch....

That butchers league was tripe, there was nothing at steak, the opposition would chop you down, our defence was chicken livered, the attack had no heart, the keeper kept shanking the ball, the captain minced his words and our changing room was a crap joint and most weeks we got slaughtered!!

2) He scored 3 in the first 4 of the 96/97 PL season, he had made his debut and played 5 games the season previous

3) Mark Crossley played for us in 2006/07, scoring a header to equalise v Southampton

4) Someone beat Hirstys record

Why does this alleged statement keep getting dragged up? does the minor point of it clearly being utter bollox not matter?

After scoring 4 goals in his first 5 premier league games lifting Wednesday to the top of the league,

Told you I used some s*** web pages for the info, that a copy and paste from his Wikipedia page.

Is it right he scored a goal clocked at 95.9 mph( Wikipedia again)

Over to MJ for Northampton, either that or I going to start researching now and double/triple check everything with other web pages when I find something.

I believe they only played in a Round Robin format against Bakers and Candlestick makers.

No. 5 was Boxing Day 1979 mate

Wednesday fans were talking about and singing about the "Boxing Day Massacre" as soon as the fixtures came out months in advance of the game - luckily for us the the prediction came true

As a Sheff Wed fan I would normally bow to your knowledge of your club, but I disagree with this one it was butchers and if I wrong so is this.

http://www.gfdb.com/Club.1506.Sheffield-Wednesday.aspx

Scroll down to

Name origins and nicknames
The reason the games were played on a Wednesday were due to Sheffield Wednesday being formed by butchers and butchers had half day finishing on a Wednesday.

But I was always under the impression it was butchers.
