Remember that very well, Halifax had thought that their new terrace behind the goal would be open and then they got denied a safety certificate - apparently there were still builders working on it when some of the Poolies arrived in town! As a result they put us all in the Paddock, which had no rake on it, just a gentle slope, and meant that it had about 3 times the number that it should have held in there - at least, for everyone to get a view.

The police lost their heads completely, there was no attempt by Pools fans to get at the Halifax fans, we were just using the walkway between the advertising hoardings and the wall at the head of the terrace and after one bloke runs on the pitch they decided this was not allowed - even though it was half time and there was no chew. I saw several carted away with bleeding heads, and on the coverage after Harold Hornsey (who showed his undoubted class by doing what the cops wouldn't by coming to actually talk to the Pools fans to help calm things down) was identified as a policeman....

I remember as well the follow-up, which was that as soon as there were signs of cases going to trial and the Sky footage of poliss merrily wielding truncheons for no valid reason being shown in open court, they dropped the cases.

I refused to go to the Shay for a while after that, even missing out on some corporate hostility at a Super League game rather than go back there. Eventually I returned there for the game when Midge got the only goal, right in front of us, close to the end of the game.....

The whole thing was a bit of a blur for me!
