It probably not the best taste talking about this due to the Garlands thing and that but anyway have a major decision to think about at the minute.

I have just been offered a new job putting £8,500 on my salary and a potentially £2k a quarter bonus if I hit my sales targets. However I would have to move back to Oxford and the job would entail me looking after a sales terriorty that stretches from Cardiff up to stockport including worcester, shrewsbury etc, this is a dual role and I would also spend half of it being the UK molecular biology expert for this company (generally travelling all over the UK helping out the other sales territory managers).

Now I currently work for a smaller company than the one mentioned, when speaking with my MD he said that didnt want to loose me but couldnt afford to raise my salary by £8,500 a year. He did say however in 3 years he doesnt want to be running the day to day aspect of the company only maybe popping in 1-2 days a week, therefore I would be running the company (therefore getting were I want to be quicker). He would give me £5k increase a year and allow me to buy shares into the buisness.

What to do?

Current Job:
- Increase in pay by 5K, chance to buy into the company and potentially running it on a day to day basis in three years (where I could buy into it more)
- Settled down here, know all our products, buisness plan and wouldnt have to move.

New Job:
- Relocate back to oxford
- Dont really know Wales, and Worcester area.
- Lots off travelling
- Would be in the job minimum of 2 years before going higher
- However get a new car, £8,500k increase.

Stay where you are, no question, the most important thing at the moment is job security. Also for the of 3.5k its not worth the loss of quality of life.

As for 'buying shares' I think I'd be looking to get them without paying for them, see if you can negotiate an equity stake based on future performance and loyalty.

Thats exactly wha I am thinking, I love my job down here and although I am in sales position its a smaller company, the only real person above me is the MD, so I have a large input into where the company is going and dealing with proposals etc. All of this would be gone if I went for the new job although its more money I would be driven mainly on targets selling a new catalogue of products I am not that familiar with, so a lot more pressure and travelling.

I like the idea of an equity stake based on future performance.

Says everything you need to make your decision. Is an extra £3.5k before tax and deductions worth the hassle of a job it sounds like you don't fancy? Simples

Thats exactly how my current boss put it, he is a sound guy and aksed me "where I want to be in 10 years".

I said either running or owning a buisness in the field I am in, his reply was "well the new job your getting a better financial package but you wont have as much imput into decision and will be all sales focused, you will be doing that for about 2 years before you move you and that wont be a manager position". He then said "you already make sales decision here and have a large imput into were we are going in the future, I dont want to be sat here in 2-3 years time and I will need someone to run the buisness." I already do this when he is away in China a lot dealing with stuff anyway.

Mr Compo, at the end of the day it's up to you, but money's not everything and I would never leave a job that I like for just an extra few grand a year- although I'd leave a job that I hated for less! If you were talking 8-10k extra then you've a decision to make that'd quite probably be too good to turn down.

As for job security in the current climate, sorry to burst any bubble but unless you've been with a company 8-10 years plus and would get a canny pay off then it's worth knack all and is probably no more secure moving or staying as you never know which company is more likely to have to lay people off 6-12 months or more from now.

You only have one offer, the other is just some words designed to make you stay.

I had to make a similar decision a few years back, Mr Compo.
Based on my experience I would stay put. I got shares given through Mr I's route and I also bought some.
If you get shares worth at least £3.5k per annum then you've lost nothing.
In the future you will be entitled to any dividends that the shares qualify for, gaining you more money.

I ended up owning a sizeable chunk of the company which, when I retired, I sold. This gave me a very nice supplement to my pension.

I think that was aimed at Sussex, not you Mr Derwent!

hope that helps (apparently we can't use the abbreviated form any more)

You should have replied "in a room full of strippers celebrating my 31st birthday"

Stick with the security Compo, especially now that the MD knows of your ambitions. He will and should keep a closer eye on you and accordingly compensate you for your hard work, expertise, and loyalty. As for the other offer, you could be walking into a position with added stress and personality conflicts, neither of which anybody needs. Good Luck.

I was in a similar situation a few weeks back. I had the offer of 55k redundancy and if I'd walked into another well paid job (which I'm confident I would have done sooner rather than later, albeit with the prospect of upping sticks ) I'd have been laughing.

However I like my new job at my existing workplace and it keeps me in the final salary pension scheme. I know the people I work with well, and it's got the potential to see rather good pay rises in the next 2 or 3 years anyway based on performance.

I would stick with what you know - after all job satisfaction has to play a large part and it seems that you already enjoy that

Cheers for the advise, I am still thinking about things but the quality of life and less stress if playing heavy on my mind.

The extra 3.5k a year isnt really an option, I have a extra job where I work in a pub 2-3 nights a week so this would be covered by that. I dont need the pub job but it amazing how good the social side of the job is and its right on the Hartford marina so nice views.

I have taken the points on board about my boss's offer just being words at the moment to make me stay, however the way I look at it is if he is talking out of his arse and in a year I realise this I can always move on, I will have an added years experience in the field from a job delaing more with sales management (ie putting together proposals and account managment) rather than a just straight sales role that the new job is offering.

I would be starting at the bottom in the new job, so would take a year to find my feet and another year experience before progressing. By the age of 35 I want to be either running or owning a similar buisness, I feel that staying put maybe the best way to do this.

I know how much the buisness makes and the outgoings so know its not going to go bust, we sell to government funding places like the cancer research, medical research council and large chemical compaines so our customers will be growing following the recession not deminishing.
