lib dems for me.they've changed the borders for the election so instead of being in teignbridge we're now in newton abbot(fascinating for you hartlepuddles I know) so it's a clear choice between lib dems and cons, the labour candidate here got only 10% of the vote for last time so no chance. we're seen as a key seat for the tories to win if they're going to get a majority and they are spending a fortune on it.

Well, this is what they tell us when they these things happen.

When the snow fell, they said to only make your journey if it was absolutely necessary.

The authorities only tell us these things because they care about people's welfare at the end of the day.

This may be true, but not in 2010 when we live in a developed country with rail and easy sea links to the largest landmass in the world. Its possible to walk from Calais all the way to China you know.

Ah, the impartial Guardian said so. It must be true then. Shall I list a load of quotes from the Telegraph and the Sun? They will be half baked twists on reality too mind you.

You missed out the detail which was that Cameron said that the North East was too reliant on civil service jobs and private industry must be developed.

That's not really surprising though is it.
The other two parties have modern form for people to consider, whereas the Liberals haven't.
As well as that, a vote for the Libs will almost certainly result in another LIB/LAB pact, further resulting in another election within two years when they start squabbling.

What politicians say and what they do sometimes differs.
I have a feeling that if Brown doesn't get a mandate, he will go or maybe get pushed. Then the coalition would be with Milliband, fulfilling Clegg's pledge not to work with Brown.
I can't really see Mr Clegg turning down the chance of power, even if it means sharing with someone else. His party would never forgive him.
Wasn't it your heroine who categorically said she wouldn't increase VAT and within weeks of getting elected almost doubled it.
They're all the same, mate. But I suspect you are aware of that.

I don't think Clegg has actually done that. All that he's said is that it would be crazy for Brown to remain as PM if they finish third in the polls but win the most seats.

No POK, he has stated categorically that he would not work with Brown given that a massive proportion of the country have no faith in him.

I think that Clegg is playing a dodgy game by getting bolshy about who he will and won't work with in the event of a hung parliament. People could see him as getting above his station with various demands and push them back to the other two parties.

I''m not so sure, he seems to be that rarest of beasts, a politician who answers a question directly. Therefore when he is asked 'who would you form a coalition with?' he tells it as he sees it.

The Liberals have had politicians for years who answer questions directly and Clegg is just another of them. The main reason for that is they have known for years that their policies, promises and answers were never in danger of being put to the test, as they were never taken seriously.
Because of the general apathy towards politicians in general and the two main parties in particular, all of a sudden the Liberals appear to be a feasible alternative.
People have got the impression that Clegg is going to come riding over the hill on a great white charger in front of a mighty throng of "new" politicians.
It is those politicians and the Party's policies who need to be scrutinized.
Once the average Liberal politician senses success he/she won't give a flying whotsit as to who they share power with. That is the operative word.......power.
This is not a presidential governent we are voting for here.........it is a government by cabinet.
The big question is........have they got the strength in depth to form an effective cabinet, as Clegg can't do all the jobs.
My local Liberal candidate is a guy called Edwin Simpson, who I have known for years. His leaflet came through the door yesterday. It said " I support Nick ". If Nick denies the bold Edwin the chance of sitting in Government by refusing to work with Brown, I'll tell you where the " I support Nick" philosophy will end up...............

Such as their eagerness to ditch the Pound and join the Euro, and other such ways that they want to hand over loads of powers to the EU.

A lot of people who would be opposed to that don't realise that the Liberals would jump at the chance to do it because it hasn't been publicised enough.

Similarly their desire for PR, people don't understand the potential bad points of it and merely see it as a "new way" while they're pissed off with things like the current expenses scandals. Minority parties such as the BNP would benefit from PR, does anybody really want that apart from Clegg?

The catch point seems to be that the two proper parties seem reluctant to expose all of these flaws in Liberal policy either because they don't want to look like the bad guys picking on the new kid on the block or because they know that they may have to form some unholy alliance with them in a few weeks and don't want to rock the boat too much.

The best result for the country would be for one of the two proper parties to gain an outright majority, whichever one of them it is and however much you or I may like their policies but people seem to be being taken in by the Liberals.

It's all heading for one hell of a mess at the moment.

They're all brilliant when they've got fantastic policies which, like them, have never been tested.
Paddy Pantsdown might have been PM if he had joined a proper party.
Clever bloke though..........he built a second career with a cushty salary and unscrutinized ( by modern standards ) expenses for being the leader of a party that very few ever took seriously. Better than following one of the other ex squaddie routes of sitting in some gatehouse pretending to be an important security guard. Two of my family were in the SBS but never got the cushy number that Paddy got.........or the salary. Brave men though........no doubt about that............they all are. clappp

I rated John Smith..............made very good ale as well !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :coool:

If John Smith hadn't have died, Tony Blair wouldn't have become Labour leader.

You can decide for yourself whether that was a good thing or a bad thing.

Probably largely good, except for Iraq - nobody likes to go to war you know.

I voted at the weekend when I was at home with the Postal vote, went for the Liberals as not a fan of Iain Wright and the Tories will never get in at Hartlepool.

I've voted Lib Dem in the end by postal ballot. I was going to vote Labour, but I was expecting a big performance by Brown on the economy (his specialist subject) and it didn't come. Cameron's been talking a lot of rubbish to be honest.

You would think that given the dire state of a number of EU states at the moment that this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for UKIP to capture votes. What with the Greece bail-out and this promising to spread to Spain, Italy etc they should be flying up in the ratings. If they can't win more votes now then they never will.

Anyway, the party whose policies most agree with my own are still Labour, so they will be getting my vote...
