National Moth Night: 18th-19th September

Celebrate moths and contribute to Britain's largest survey of species on the wing!

Throughout the British Isles members of the public are encouraged to see what moths they can find in their chosen location raising the profile of these intriguing, attractive creatures.

For the first time ever National Moth Night will take place over two nights in 2009. This will enable a special experiment to learn about moth migration by tracking colour-marked moths.

To take part you could set up a moth-trap in your garden, keep an eye out at home or attend a public event. Wherever you are, watch out for the colour-marked moths. Should you be lucky enough to find a colour marked moth submit your photograph to the National Moth Night website for verification.

The moth records from participants across the country will be pooled into a fascinating summary of what was on the wing, and published in the journal Atropos.

Moths are crap.

They're the retards that didn't evolve in to butterflies.

They appear to be made out of dust, are happy to burn themselves to death and serve no purpose apart for being food for other animals.

That's what I reckon anyway.

Aye. Fook 'em. If you catch them by one wing it falls off and they eat all your clothes and curtains and that.

Funny that true (albeit not very interesting) story, a few weeks ago at work I put the kettle on for a well earned 10 O'Clock coffee, just as the was about to click off this fooking moth flew straight into funnel into the boiling water. It's the first time I've ever witnessed suicide. Someone must have told it that it was a moth.

I poured the lads a cuppa, and reboiled it for my own not telling them they were drinking the remains of the Kamikazee moth.

That was quite funny for a girl.

To be boring......... a moth trap consists of a box with a light in it. There's an entrance to the box which is designed a little bit like a lobster pot so that moths attracted by the light fly in but can't get out. When a moth trap is left outside with the light on during the night, the next morning you can see what moths have been flying around .

Bloke goes into a doctor's and says: "I think I'm a moth."
Doc: "Oh, you don't need a doctor. you need a psychiatrist. There's one down the corridor."
Bloke: "I know, but I was just passing and saw your light on."
