Liverpool football fan Michael Shields, who was jailed for 15 years in Bulgaria for the attempted murder of a barman, has been pardoned.

Shields, was convicted after a disturbance following Liverpool FC's European Cup victory in Turkey in 2005.

He was in a prison in the UK.

He should recieve a lot of money as compensation for being falsely incarcerated

About 4 years too late!!!

Will he get the last 4 years of his life back? Unfortunatly compo no amount of compensation can do that.

Cant see a claim for compensation succeeding, he was convicted outside this country, only reason he was in a British prison was, based on Bulgaria judges agreeing to reduce his sentence by 5 yrs.

We all know he was innocent,( i mean someone else confessed to it) but unless goes through the european court, I cant see him having much success in getting compensation from Bulgaria. Though he should.

And as Yubep says money can't buy a lot of things

I'm yet to be utterly convinced by that but I hope you're right.

Personally I only know the limited amount that the media want us to know so wouldn't like to make a presumption of his guilt or otherwise unless I was in full possession of all the facts.

well if he has been given a full pardon the that suggests someone at the home office thinks he is innocent.

Makes those that, errrr, DOUBT? his innocence on here sound a bit foookin stupid to be honest.

I mean, what the fook do you know, TPP, and OO about his guilt or otherwise.

I watched a documentary about him some time ago and there was still plenty of suggestion that he could be responsible.

I have never said he was either guilty not not guilty, I have just stated I am yet to be convinced that he is innocent like Fetish Bob suggests we 'all' know he is. Try reading what I have wrote instead of what you think I wrote.

I hope he is innocent and I think he probably is but just because 40,000 Liverpool fans held up a 'Micheal is innocent' banner at Anfield and Steven Gerrard tells us he is innocent doesn't mean he is.

So, what the fook do you know, ADG about his guilt or otherwise?

If the home office gives him a full pardon then they obviously think he is innocent.

Isnt everyone innocent until proven guilty?

Apart from OJ simpson of course.

They originally didn't pardon him so they obviously originally thought there was sufficient doubt to suggest he was innocent.

This is all very fine and dandy releasing the bloke if he didn't do it.

But the basis that we have cleared him on is on the confession of another scouser that he did half kill a a bulgarian barman with a bottle.

Can we now please arrest and deport to Bulgaria for sentencing the guilty man who has confessed.

Is that FACT! or is it what he said was the case without it being proven?

Shields was in bed at the time of the arrest but was he in bed at time of the incident?

They made an interesting point on the News that to be pardoned is different to having the conviction overturned. He's been pardoned because it's a reasonable assumption he didn't do it but having been convicted it's not been proved beyond reasonable doubt that he's not guilty.

Anyway he was in jail in Bulgaria at the time so it must have been some other scouser that pinched my strimmer in Halewood. I wonder if someone will confess.

I thought 'pardon' meant 'forgiveness' or, at least, the overlooking of a misdemeanor?
That would suggest he did do it, otherwise there's be nothing to pardon.

The effect of a full pardon is unclear in some jurisdictions. In England it is said that a full pardon clears the person from all infamy, removing all disqualifications and other obloquy, so that a pardoned person may take action for defamation against anyone who thereafter refers to him as a convict.

But that still implies he was guilty in the first place.

can the British governemtn only pardon him as he was found guilty in another country and therefore cant overturn the original conviction

Does it not refer to the fact that he was found guilty in the first place as opposed to implying that he was guilty in the first place? sctatchinghead

I heard Jack Straw on the radio earlier and he said he was pardoned because he regularly agonised over the thought that he felt an innocent man was in prison.

I think Straw would have looked into the case and know the facts more than any of us. The signed confession does sort of suggest it wasn't Shields as well.

Plus Jamie Carragher said was he was innocent.

Case dismissed.

Jack Straw is an utter and total grade 'A,' full weight, jelly backed, obnoxious, rank, manky, shit house.

Just look up his involvement in the Jeremy Thorpe/Norman Scott affair at the start of his career. He's got the drop on so many people that he's managed to become a multi-millionaire and now he's playing God with people's lives.

What a fucking horrible c u n t he is.

But, hey, there's no credible alternative......

So you are saying a vastly overrated, ugly, thick, scouse, centre back isn't a creditable alternative? 'Stevie G' also backed the lad, you seriously aren't going to question his untarnished credibilty are you??

Plus Jack Straw looks like the demon headmaster.

You are a hard man to please Spender.
