Those people who say that exams are getting easier again, don't simply know how much work people have to put in to actually get good results - A Levels in particular - they are hard.

the jump from GCSE to A'level is much harder than the jump from A'Level to Degree and even Masters.

The Schools have to improve!

If the schools falls down the league table, it gets it's arsed kicked and funding reduced

I would struggle to pass a GSCE in maths or physics now, but I can't say me falling my 'O' Levels in 1986 has set me back in my career, I earn a good wack and I am in the lucky position of enjoying (most of the time) the job I do

And speaking from a personal view, judging from the reports and requests I get sent in my job, grammar doesn't appear to be a requirement in the vast majority of people under the age of 25

THE only decent thing this sham of a government has done well has been to free up the National Curriculum and allow teachers to TEACH . The system as it was simply turned both kids and teachers off. I am enjoying , what is, a return to full and inspiring teaching for the first time in ten (government controlled) years !

Very true my grammer is shocking and admit to the fact however I am very good at talking and making my point which has served me well in my current job. My previous employment as a DNA analyst for the Forensic Science Service was what I thought was my dream job and worked my ass of to get it going to uni twice. Unfortunatly in a lot of things in life all that education doesnt equate to getting a good salary, people in the forensic sectre are paid a pittance for what they do and the FSS is going down the pan. I realised this a year and a half into the job so switched to what I am doing now as I work in scientific sales and support for people like cancer research oxford uni etc. So exams arnt the be all and end all.

Sham of a government....

I imagine you never went to a comprehensive in Hartlepool under the Tories........

English Martyrs, the one that used to Henry Smiths and a host of others are light years away from ones I went to

Still, that is just my opinion, like

Agreed the 80s were bad (I was a school kid too then) but the profession expected a lot from this government and until now we got soundbites and over-control. Education became a political football with politicians blaming teachers for the things THEY forced on teachers in the first place. Now there is,as I said, a glimmer of hope whereupon the curriculum has been "free'd up" somewhat. There are still problem areas;

1. The government "fast track" teacher training programme . Questionable reasons why some opt for it , not "vocation driven" ?

2. The use of untrained "helpers" in schools , most especially in the "Bash street high's" !

3. The increasing influence of the political quango GTCE organisation , (mouthpiece of the government).

4. Weak teaching unions .

5. Quality of new teachers coming out of the TDA , in some area's (Midlands) they are badly trained and need re-training once appointed.

However the new curriculum remains the ONE area where change can really be made...long may it last !

If you're the benchmark for a supposedly educated 20-something then the statement in the thread title is undoubtedly correct.

The "red pen" stuff is a funny issue, where Iam there is no problem with it...but in some places (Leicester comes to mind) it is an issue.

True example; I was working in a crap inner city Leicester comp a few years back and a dep headteacher told the staff to mark in GREEN ink as red ink could cause "loss of confidence and appear to be angry..." I then asked the kids I taught if they would be offended by red ink and they replied , "Not bothered sir your the only teacher here who marks our books anyway" !

Some middle-class twatters in teaching...most of them in Leicester !

Actually..while on the subject of that crap school....I knew it was going to be crap from day one. I had joined them from a really good school in N.Yorks and on their "teacherday" I met the other 10 new staff... 10! The alarm bells were ringing, thats too many and also tells you 10 staff left the place the term before. Anyhow they had us,well them (the 9) highlighting do's and don't's into a folder, I had switched off. Then I heard it....this frumpy dep headteacher say's "...And if you don't do this I'll be down on you lot like a ton of bricks". That was it, I got up and was heading out the room when they asked if I was ok ? "I've never been spoken to like that by anyone, I'm going home now to polish off the best part of a bottle of wine and when I come back tomorrow you can bloodywell apologise madam". I did a year with them but was totally switched off to the staff. Had a lovely (all Asian) yr11 class mind who all got As and Bs !

The only subject taught to perfection nowadays is GCSE Mispalced Confidence, they're full of the stuff till they reach the workplace and the penny drops that while the expectations of the education system may have dropped, the expectations of employers haven't.
I'd be interested to see the pass rates at A & B at O level for the past 50 years in graph form...

When I was a lad leaving school, if someone got 10 A's they were declared a child prodigy and lifted immediatly to some far off school of learning, now they are common place and lifted to a Burger joint to rid the floor of grease at hourly intervals !!!

I always thought green ink was only used by Auditors, I suppose that's because I worked in Accounts for over 30 years!

But apparently not......

How can you say that Ripper you don’t know me and just because I am rubbish at spelling and grammar you just assume that I am an idiot. My exams for my degree and masters didnt seem that easy and the Home Office and the University I attended didnt think my grammar and punctuation was rubbish when I got my dissertation published and highest mark in the year.

I've had graduates work for me who couldn't spell or construct a sentence correctly. I shouldn't need to be teaching them basic English in the workplace. The idiots responsible for the education system fail to realise this as their expectations are more about gifting A grades to people as opposed to educating them.

Are you talking about Kosher there, by any chance, Mr Ripper? I can see how he would fit very well in your line of work, but I see what you mean about his grammar.

Poor spelling and grammar should mean a fail in a GCSE, never mind A-Levels, degrees and post-grads.

When I was at school you would lose marks in EVERY subject for spelling, nowadays they don't even consider it important in English. Like I said, it's all about gifting grades and certificates nowadays to try and improve the school's league table position, education of the kids being a poor second to the ego of the teachers and the administrators.

I havent heard so much tosh in all my life. What about people with dyslexia etc that cannot do this without the aim of a computer. Which is also a large point a lot of coursework etc in higher education is done using a pc so has assistive measures to combat bad spelling etc. (i know this shouldnt be used all the time and a basic grasp of spelling etc should be known) however every job I have ever had required me to use a pc for report writing etc. Just because I couldnt construct the same words etc writing with a pen is irrelevant as its not required in modern work place.

My dad is one of the most articulate and clever people I know however he is shocking at writing, grammar and punctuation.

It works like this, I've lived through the system, done it myself, went back to try it again a few years ago and had kids go through the system, I even went back courtesy of work for a year to get letters behind my name, the system is bulled up and is easier. I would like to see GCSE's based on core subjects, not the dizzy made up subjects that will probably account for the bulk of the improvement in figures.
Use your logic, no system can improve that much, that consistently, statisticians have been querying the figures for years, but e3vryone wants to think their kids are great, the teachers are great and the schools are great, what a pity we are so far down the world tables in literacy and falling, see the big picture, if a kid in Africa can outperfrom a kid in this country with all the advantages we have, you have to start wondering.

Coursework is a mandate for cheating and dyslexia is a modern way of saying thick. FACT.

I'll tell you why it's important, if you write down a drug dosage for a patient and get it wrong, it's no use to the person you may kill because of your incompetence. Pens are irrelevant...? sctatchinghead you fool, get a proper job and find out. if you're hanging over the side of a ship writing down notes, a computer is as much use as you at a Shakespeare play. stpid

I have to say anyone writing a drug dosage is either a doctor or a pharmacist and sure they would be able to do so. I didnt say pens are irrelevant I had to write continuity reports in pen when working for the forensic science service. What job that requires higher education involves you hanging over the end of a ship writing notes.

Get a proper job what in your mind consitiutes a proper job? I worked as a microbiologist for a year and a half went back to uni to do my masters and work in the foresnic field a year in fingerprint evidence and a year as a DNA analyst. I happen also to like Shakespeare you make a blind judjement about me without even knowing me.

Thanks for that so my Bsc and Msc mean less because in your eyes the pass marks have been lowered. Can I just say then by your account my Degree would be worth "more" the PoK as I graduated 4 years ago.

No, they'd be worth less to me if you turned up to work for me and revealed your inability to use your own language correctly. It bugs the shyte out of me to be honest, thick kids with degrees and stuff.

I can use my own language correctly I am well spoken and well read. I agree that punctuation isnt my strong point, but every interview I have ever had I have gotten the job and done well in my work. Some people who have degrees could be considered "thick" in other aspects of life but are very good at their job, I can only speak of the science field as thats all I know. To be honest in this area of work if your academically clever you will do well to a point be need to know how to talk and be a "people person" to move up the ladder.

Kosher what do you think about grammar and dyslexia in schools should they both get an automatic fail at GCSE

In the case of Dyslexia I have found that schools generally cope well with, and provide well ,for students . I have taught a number of gifted students at History GCSE level and they have gone on to university. Like you Compo some Dyslexic students go on to achieve well at university and the modern workplace is (usually) equipped to allow them to do their job.
When I was at university we had a chap who was training to be a teacher and was Dyslexic...his historic knowledge and teaching ideas were second to none! Certainly he would struggle writing on a board, but the modern classroom is well set up for teachers like him and has all manner of "gismo's" (laptop powered boards and inter-active boards). However I must add that he was going to teach in a Dyslexic school, clearly he would struggle in mainstream. That said ,in my time ,I have found Dyslexic students ALWAYS have a skill...usually artistic which can put them right at the top of the class in that area.
As for grammar, well that is another ball game altogether. Even the BBC is ,at times, guilty of "dumbing down" TV to the point that children get mixed messages. ou can add into that "youth-speak", "music", "U.S influence", "texting", and even their parents early (bad)influences !
In short then...Dyslexia SHOULD NOT be a social/work/educational barrier. Grammar is a continuing battle zone in schools !

Thanks for that and know what you mean. My school/college/uni's were brilliant with my dyslexia (i dont have it that bad but some days it horrible and cant get down very well what I want to say) anyway your correct about generally having a skill that doesnt involve punctuation etc, mine was science as find it really easy, also I find people who are dyslexic are very good speakers and can formulate a conversation and argument very well orally.

Actually Mr Ripper my school broke the mould last term when we stepped out of the national curriculum ahead of any "government instruction". I gave a talk to Warwickshire headteachers showing them what we had achieved and how we did it. It all began when I had a chance conversation with a teacher from LA in the States, from there I worked damn hard to pull our school away from government control (of curriculum) and we are now LEADING THE FIELD. Education ministers come and go....I dare say this government will do the same too !
