Driving home late last night got me thinking of two questions. The first:

Is there anything about your life that really pisses you off?

40% tax bracket

"Oh well done for earning over 32k a year but we're gonna take more off you now for every bonus and pay rise you get just think of it as our little pat on the back for doin well"

I pay tax on my pay then I celebrate getting paid by driving home (tax on car, tax on diesel) and going on the drink (tax on ale) then I buy a bab and get in a (tax)i

I work for the man to pay the man and it really gets to me.

people who will trod down on other people to make financial gain. Do these greedy people think they will live forever? Do they not realise they can't take their wealth with them to the next astral plane??
Best example of people like this = Rupert Murdoch

What pisses me off is not having known enough soon enough.

Youth is wasted on the young.
There should be lessons in life, with plenty of practical periods.

Having too few years on this planet. 20 minutes ago I was still at school. 10 minutes ago I was a 20 year old soldier. 5 minutes ago my 11 year old daughter was born and suddenly I look in the mirror and I'm 40 odd. What happened?

I'm with Snowy on this one - the cult of celebrity.
How come people get paid zillions for doing fuck all, or for fronting a fucking chat show on telly, or for kicking a ball around for that matter, or for wearing some clothes and being in a magazine, or for lots of other things.
Then yer get people working in child protection, nurses, those working in childrens homes with damaged kids, people doing jobs that have a massive effect on others lives (and with masses of responsibility and the most chances of allegations against them) getting fuck all in comparison.
Now I sort of know why this is but it still pisses me off.
The worlds a fucked up place.

Take several hundred very fit young men. Arm them to the teeth. Train them to kill and be extremely agressive. Give them a cause to believe enough to fight for and let them loose.

The result is a glimpse into hell.

in the day and age of the 30 second news soundbite it was very sobering to watch a one hour doccumentary about a small group of woefully under rescourced men spending 5 days of their lives risking life and limb to secure a tiny patch of ground. after numeous deaths and many thousands of rounds of ammunition supported by air stikes and choppers delivering more and more supplies and ferrying out the injured and dying they achieved their objective.

the very next day they were told the piece of land was actually worthless and that they would be abandonning it. as well as the loss of life the cost to the british taxpayer was the equivalent of buying and stocking a new hospital.

Britain. Note I've missed the Great off. It should be Ridiculous Britain. This was confirmed to me a few days before I left when the TV Doctor on Good Morning said don't let your kids lick the Christmas Cake bowl because its got raw egg in it.

Oh fu ck off!!!

I know there's few patriots who'll shoot volleys at me for it but you can stick Britain up your arse. And before you get emotional about it, shall we compare medals?? I got one for serving Britain. It promptly shat on me in quantity.

Just the one?

I know lads these days in their 20's who have 8 or 9 campaign medals for the various operations over the last decade.

I agree with you by the way on good old Britain, I'll resign the place first chance I get.

War is sometimes the only option when you are faced with an armed agressor. Hitler and Galtieri being two examples. The problem is that these days WE are the armed agressor.

According to the financial elite yes.
But deep down we know that's a load of bollocks. It's not a productive nation at all.
If Britain were razed to the ground tomorrow it wouldn't cause many world shortages. I'm talking about the REAL economy where people starve if they don't have food, not the one in which speculators get their gains wiped out if they make a dodgy investment.
Now take China, Russia, or even South Korea off the map and see if the same holds true.
The West has allowed itself to become totally dependent on Chinese manufacturing, Indian mindpower, Asian electronics, and to a large extent Russian oil. It wouldn't know where to turn if any of those disappeared.

Did you see the air strike they did at Mogadishu? they overflew the objective with an AC130 otherwise known as 'The Terminator' It's called this for good reason it carried a 25mm multi barrelled Gatling gun as its primary ground attack weapon. The yanks as always give it a nickname and in this case its 'Puff the magic dragon' this thing ain't no poof though.

The rate of fire is 4200 rounds a minute... think about that for a moment. 70 bullets pour out of this gun every second and if anyone of them hit you then you're in for a very bad day. At full pelt it puts a round in every square inch of ground it flies over. Nothing in its path is left in a breathing condition - ever. It is entirely dangerous.

Of course you're going to defend your country against aggression. Or that of your allies if you entered into a pact. But in that case it's not (necessarily) YOU who caused the war.
So it's still wrong, pointless, useless, and all that. Just not your fault.

P.S., talking about alliances what would the world be like if we hadn't sided with the wrong country at the beginning of the 20th century? Pre-nazi Germany and Britain working peacefully together could have been a tremendous force but nobody gave it a serious bash. Instead we all collaborated to throw away a generation in the fields of France and Eastern Europe and set the standards for a century of killing.

Wrong yes but useless and pointless no.

Sometimes a country needs to defend itself, when you have been invaded and violated then you have the right to defend yourself (I guess this goes for Iraqis and Afghans too).

War is dirty and horrible but occasionally there is no option. It's certainly not useless.

Defence is not useless. War is. Somebody caused the war by creating the conditions for it in the first place. That in itself is useless.

How do you defend yourself against an armed agressor without shooting back? If you manage to repel said invaders then by definition war had a use.

The war is not the shooting back. The war is the original invasion. That's what has no use. In some wars there isn't any shooting back.

Eh? Now come on Mr Head I expected better of you.

War is actually a legal state of hostilities between two states with a start and finish by declaration rather than an individual action. We also have armed conflicts such as Iraq and the Falklands which were not legally wars.

Yes but that's not what really what we were talking about. No more so than the "war" on terrorism. Dictionary definitions don't come into it.
Those who called war useless were talking about the squandering of lives. That's what's useless.

squander: "to spend recklessly or prodigiously"

Money spent on defence....? .... as Roosevelt said, "talk quietly and carry a big stick," in other words, you have to have it and you've got to show you have the capability not to nedd to use it.
