The chip shop shout thread has made me think of something that has done our lasses head in for some time.

A couple of years ago we went into Don Bees, and our lass asked for a pineapple ring and chips.

The lass on the till shouted 'can you put a pineapples ring in' to the lad who does the frying. He then shouted out the back 'can you bring me a pineapples ring through?'

'Pineapples ring' was written on the blackboard too.

Has anyone encountered this unnecessarily plural phrase at any other chippies in the town?

This is a similar concept to when people say about a football match e.g. "It was a great game, loads of goals, goalmouth action and sendings off"

I would say sending offs therefore all those who say sendings off must be wrong surely??

Which does eveybody on here say?

Ps, people who would say "pineapples ring" ( stpid ) are stupid bounders.

The sending is the noun (gerund) in the phrase, the off is the preposition, so the noun gets pluraled. So sendings off is right.

In the case of pineapple rings, the pineapple might look like a noun but it's actually an adjectival use of a noun, it's therefore ring that gets pluraled, so "pineapple rings" is right.

If yer need enny more grammer lessons please lerrez no.

Unless of course they were giving you the backside of a Pineapple that by some strange mutation of evolution had an anus, hence the Pineapple's ring would have been correct
