Didn't see the Ronaldo thread but I concur with the anti-racist sentiment. I think two other things, tho...one is if I see a genuinely racist remark (ie one that denigrates people from other races, without reason), I tend to ignore it on the grounds that the speaker is some sort of lunatic and can't think be reasoned with.
Some people do give reasons for their 'racist' remarks, tho; in other words they're not strictly speaking racially prejudiced, just have their facts wrong. They think, for instance, that other races are 'coming over and taking their jobs' or 'committing all the inner city crime.' etc.
Strictly speaking, racism is defining/condemning someone on grounds of their racial background, but these people aren't necessarily doing that. That's why some have been incensed to be called racists when they're actually talking immigration.

Which of course is a different question.......

And it's not all to do with the recession....there's still loads of work out there but it seems the Poles (etc) are doing the jobs at half, or even less, the pay!!!! confised confised

I agree it gets complicated. But my cousin's a builder and he's nearly always had to work away from home. It's not new. Ironically, one of his longest stints away was in Poland itself, years ago. I guess he and his mates were 'taking' the jobs of Poles, so it works both ways.

Does seem funny to lock a football releated topic on a football forum website.

Now Im no Man U fan, but any sale of a player for a reported £80 million pound will be discussed on a football site.

Kaka was recently bought by Real Madrid from AC Milan and if I'm right it was discussed on here yet not locked.

There are far worse posts on here than that one, which people have pointed out, rightly deserve to be locked more.

Perhaps a sticky can be posted listing all topics which can't be discussed.

Maybe, years ago, the Poles didn't have the people qualified to do the job to a decent standard!!!! confised confised

These days the British workers over here are getting undercut by a big margin by shithouse bosses....not the Poles directly!!!!

That is why I don't blame the Poles in any way....but something needs to be done!!!! confised

Aye, but that's supposition, and that's where problems start, like.

In fact, me cousin while working in Poland, was given a Government allowance which all workers got, regardless. He told them he didn't need it, but was made to have it anyway, as that was how they did things. Imagine the uproar here if the Government started gifting immigrant workers.

Well the government seem quite willing to give hand outs to ugly, scruffy teenage girls, who have had about 15 kids, so why not give hand outs to hard working immigrants?

Just about everyone is working for what they did 10 years ago. There's a recession which has nothing to do with Poles.

I do admire the way some posters can read threads which directly contradict their point of view, but continue to cling to it their beliefs regardless.

When they came the money started dropping well before the recession

Well, look, I don't suppose either of us has the exact facts and figures for your area.

Nationwide, yes, there've been a small number of cases where immigrant workers have been employed as contractors at less than the minimum wage, this undercutting British firms.
There've also been a great number of cases where immigrant workers are employed here in specialist roles (in the NHS for instance) for which there's a shortage of personnel in Britain. Again, there are many cases where British people won't accept certain low-paid, menial jobs, but workers from other countries will. And, as has been pointed out, English people can benefit by working in other EU countries.

There's all this, and more, but you prefer the simplistic view that Poles are taking 'our' jobs.

Sussex, those were my first 2 lines. Did you read the rest?

And, yes, you need figures, otherwise how do you have facts? You may know many Europeans have come to live in your area, and you may know that unemployment is high. You don't know how (or if) the two are related, and you don't know (amongst other things) how many people from your area have left to work in France, Spain or Poland.

I certainly would be resentful. I'd be livid.
I 'm not pretending I know what the answer is. People on both sides of the immigration argument tend to simplify things.
I noticed on another thread that even among the posters who're most scornful about immigration policy no-one would come out and say that there shuold be no controls at all. So they're shirking the issue a bit (apart from ADG  )

Ah yes.

And as I type this, three Macedonians have told me to move, as they are going to do my job for a quarter of my rate.

And here come the Ukraine exiles as well. Aah, they want the macedonians jobs.

Its like the United Nations in here.

That's because they *don't* think there shouldn't be any controls at all. If everybody just upped sticks and emigrated to any country they wanted whenever it suited them, some countries would be overwhelmed by immigrants while others would see such a mass exodus they'd become unsustainable. The criteria for accepting an immigrant have to be tailored to the country's circumstances - population pressure and all the rest.

But since we, the UK, are now in Europe and the whole European idea has gone far beyond its original remit, we have to accept people from 26 different countries with no questions asked, regardless of whether it's good for us or not. We aren't *allowed* to have an immigration policy for those countries, which seems completely stupid to me: why those countries and not any others, apart from their happening to be on the same continent as we nearly are? What has Bulgaria got that Uzbekistan hasn't?

Now I've said that, don't for fook's sake ask me what the immigration criteria should be. I'm not an expert and I'm not sure anybody can legitimately profess to be one. How do you define when immigration has reached untenable proportions?

If you break it down into immigrants and EU domiciles, the immigration level runs at about 4% of the population. However most people just look at skin that isn't white and think 'immigrant.' Quite a lot of the Asian and West Indian families are now fourth generation British. People yap on about how many immigrants there are 'taking our jobs' and 'building ghettos' and the net result is that people with a legitimate reason for living in the country have a bugger of a job getting the necessary documents.

You're fourth generation immigrant yourself having found out that Great Grandfather came from Tyrone at the turn of the century and the first two things he did was get a job and marry a local girl. They come over here they take out jobs and they take .........etc
