Anybody watching it on ITV Sunday Afternoon ?

I usually back Oxford to win because that's where my Dad grew up after being born in Hartlepool, and my Aunt used to work for the University.

I always watch it to be honest. It's a great British tradition, despite what anybody may think about the Universities and the usual controversy there is about the amount of foreign students in the crews.

And Cambridge is a dump, as well. clappp

My mate went to Cambridge, I remember getting back to his house after a night out while he was at uni and passing one of his housemates going out the other way dressed in Lycra. He was on the rowing team, it was half four in the morning on a weekend. Coked-up, somehow I think not. As for Cambridge being a dump sctatchinghead

Mind I'd rather set fire to my head and put it out with a shovel than watch that shower of shite, well done Mr POK you've found something else to like that's nearly as shit as Eurovision- quite an effort.

I don't think it's a case of liking the Boat Race itself, I like the tradition surrounding the boat race and because of that I watch it evry year and I hope Oxford win.

The rowing crews do take the race seriously though given the rivalry, so if you thought it was just a leisurely punt on the river, I would recommend you'd better think again.

I was sharing a nice pot of Earl Gray with Dame Thora Hird and had the urge to tune the wireless into the Home Service.

Imagine my surprise when I found it was that time of year when those young men who had recently gone up to Oxbridge have a race in their boats in preparation for taking their place in government.

Eeee I hope they don't sink this time, they must have a terrible time getting the smell of the Thames out of their underpants.

Soooooooorff

Are you mad I have lived in both Oxford and Cambridge and Cambridge is far a more pretty city. Obviously yuou havent been round cowley in oxford or kidlington, and only been round the centre (which is crap for shops) also full of stupid people wearing university of oxford hoodies when they clearly dont go there. Only one thing I have to say that is better in oxford is the pubs that only people know the city can get to like the turf which is brilliant and out of the way so no stupid america tourist are there drinking newcastle brown ale

The only time I went to Cambridge was to watch us draw 0-0 in 2002-03 - a game we should have won.

In Oxford, you can see all old buildings and spires around you. In Cambridge, all we saw was coffee shops.

I've never been to Cowley, I've seen the BMW Rover plant, the Kassam's not too far from the BMW Plant. My uncle lives in Kidlington - from the outside it' not that bad but there are loads of chavs that hang around the High Street in Kidlington.

My Dad grew up in Headington and went to Cheney School - a lot nicer houses there than Kidlington.

I know what you mean about the Oxford hoodies though. I saw a girl with on on one - didn't look like a student, I thought "Why is she living this far off from college?" sctatchinghead

Kidlington doesn't look like the sort of place Oxford Uni students would go.

There's a nice student pub opposite around Broad Street - I think it was called the White Hart!!!!

so in other words you spent an afternoon in cambridge and decided it was crap because you didnt look around it, thats like saying i went to oxford looked around the westgate and all i saw was shops and not going to the bodlien library and science museum (the place with all the heads outside)

I just prefair the city centre of cambridge to that of oxford also suprisingly less full of toffs in the good places (not like the eagle and child or lamb and flag pub in oxford thats full of hurray henrys). Any i do like oxford spend lots of time there as the g/f lives in abingdon.

good pub is chequers over the road from pizza hut near the hsbc or further down the street all bar one that has loads of good foreign beers

Just what is the Hartlepool connection then PoK.

I have this feeling that you and Mr Muttley share a Grandad.

He was born in Hartlepool - Elwick Road.

Cheney School was an ordinary State school.

The houses in Headington aren't all that expensive.

It's not a case of being a fan of the Boat Race, I've always watched because it's always been there - next Sunday is the Boat Race, and then next Saturday is the Grand National, the only time in the year everyone takes interest in a horse race because they know they can make some money out of it.

Heard of the phrase when your in a hole stop digging, people I know who love and win a lot at horse racing hardly ever win at the national as its a lottery, either you are making this point about people who know nothing about horse racing or just being a bit of a plonker.

White dog turd was always there in the 80's did you watch that too

The Boat Race could be far more 'interesting' if it was spiced up a bit,,, the odd minefield comes to mind.

Hang on, a boat sinking and Oxford winning the Boat Race...I make that Pimms o' Clock, don't you !

As I say, I only ally myself to Oxford because two of my family used work for the university, I know its not the same as being an Oxford student.

You can't really not take an interest in the Boat Race if you don't favour one of the Universities. That's why I back Oxford and I din't like Cambridge winning it ll the time when I was younger.

But despite it being a very simple concept of two groups of eight people in two boats, it can actually be quite dramatic when one boat overtakes the other, they're neck and neck, one of the boats sinking etc, clashing of oars, choppy waters etc.

Dramatic I dont think so the rowing in the olympics is good and watchable but the boat race sorry dont agree why not open it up to other universities and have say a 8 boat race from oxford cambridge, durham, manchester, hull, liverpool (ie all red brick unis)
