Once hired a Hertz car and got a £300 excess taken off me credit card for damage to the car which didn't happen. Got it back eventuially but had a hell of a job finding their customer services and then getting the money credited back.

Haven't hired a car in the UK for many years, but do several times a year in Spain and most of the companies are the same. The ones that I always go out of my way to avoid are Europcar.

Whereever you hire it from make very sure that you check it over thoroughly before you drive away, even to the point of taking digital pictures. Checking out is usually cursory whereas checking in is a full blown mot and inspection.

There are some car hire companies that make more money from damage thanv renting cars, 1car1 being the most notorious. Mind you they've got bust a couple of weeks ago.
