I'm in the market for a new laptop and have about £500 to spend. Trouble is I know dick all about what I'm supposed to be looking for. I was gonna buy one of them cheap Dell ones that Tesco have on offer, but I read the thread on here from a couple of weeks warning against the bargain basement ones. I'm a bit worried about buying one that won't last beyond it's warranty period, or that will be slow as fook after a year or two.

Do any of you kind folk have any recommendations within that price range?

That new place in Whitby Street is crap. Skinny birds, spotty thighs. Waste of money.

If you're in Edinburgh, Burke & Hare's in the Old Town is the place to go. £20 will get her knickers off.

Nothing these days is as slow as fook unless you allow the software gremlins into your machine.

My advice is always buy the laptop with the toughest keyboard. Give it a bloody good prodding and choose one that really feels solid.

Software gremlins? All the music from my old laptop is on an external hard-drive at the mo, however most of it was downloaded from Limewire. Would it be best not to put any of it on the new one?

Personally i would recomend the acer brand (3rd largest manufacturer) http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0810976164.1237387518@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccefadegjmmmjehcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=419076&category_oid=
Although i wouldnt normally recomend buying from pc world but least gives you an idea of specs and what to look for

Scan everything with avast and superantispyware before you transfer it over from the external

Nah, if you've played all the files already then you know they're only music.
Just run your computer with the most restrictive set of privileges possible and any nastyware won't be able to propagate. I've no idea how to do that on Vista mind.

I have an acer laptop and it's been great until my 12 year old daughter goes onto MSN and then it wipes Vista out.

I bought it from Comet last summer for around 350 and it's spot on.
