I'm going on a stag do to Amsterdam in May, and wondered if anyone can recommend any digs.

I'm not fussy about the quality of the paintwork or the view or owt, we just want somewhere to doss which is clean enough.

There will be about 15 of us at least, so a hostel is an option if they're any good.

On a Pools tour we stayed here, can highly recommend it and it slept 3 in beds but sofa's could accomodate couple others, could pull a fast one book one apartment take couple blow up beds, there really is plenty of room to do that

Short walk from red light district so if easily offended try somewhere. As if you would be. By short I mean you fall out of front door and your there.

When Pools did one of their pre-season tours in Holland I stayed in Amsterdam for 4 nights ( yes I know its a long way from Eindehoven and that village where we played Oss), I got our lass to book me some cheap accomodation on the internet.
I found the place eventually oposite a club called Dirty Dicks, just along from a club called Cock Ring, next to a gay erotic book shop/art gallery with loads of rainbow flags around. Slap bang in the middle of the gay sector.
I should have known something was up by the name of the place - the White Tulip, but the emblem of the place gave it away - a big white erect phalic tulip.
- She's not daft our lass.

I got bitten by bed bugs and kept awake by the mouse ( where?, there on the stair). You had to move the bed to open the window or the door, and the free breakfast gave me food poisoning.

Don't stay there!

hey john

when i went (10 years ago now) me and the four guys I was travelling with spent the night huddled in a phone box, all wedged in and trying to sleep standing up. It was February. It was snowing. We'd run out of cash. And we hadn't booked any accomodation.

I don't recommend this approach.

Ta for all the help lads, I think I'll avoid phone boxes and big tulip members.

I did go about 7 years ago, but I couldn't tell you the name of the hotel, how to get there or anything. It was a 'Christian' hotel in the red light district is about all I can remember. There were 4 of us dossing in bunks in a room no bigger than a large cupboard, with a window too small to crawl out of.

It's the only place I've ever seen one of those German 'shelf' toilets, where your big jobs land on a kind of plinth inside the bog, so you can have a good look a them before you pull the chain.

The problem is that if you've got a larger than average quantity you want to void, you have to stand up to finish the job, as it piles up like a big iceberg on the shelf.

I think they were trying to save souls. I was worried they would try and brainwash us, but there wasn't even a bible in the room! In fact the staff didn't say much too us, just looked at us pityingly.

I lived in that Christian Youth Hostel for six weeks in 1993 or something. It was the cheapest youth hostel in Amsterdam and it was there because that was where Jesus would have gone to save souls. After three weeks I ran out of money and so I became the cleaner so I could get free board. A week before that I started attending Bible readings because they gave you free hot chocolate and biscuits. You had to be back by midnight and they were the staunchest christians. One minute to midnight would see a queue of 20 grown men all stoned, saying "you got first", "no, you go first".

Another time I shared that phonebox outside the railway station with an italian homeless heroin addict who went and begged and shared his m and m's with me...

Five of us went on a pub trip, and we got fixed up with digs just around the corner from Rembrantsplein. There's a kebab shop with three or four rooms above it and they rent them out, or did. Cheap, clean, comfortable and handy for the city centre. Face the Rainbow Cafe, go just around the left hand corner and it's on the right, next to the Brazilian Coffee shop.

I had a pooh in Anne Frank's house. :uhoh:

I felt sorry for that little girl ... being deaf, dumb and blind during the war must have been a real handicap.

I can strongly recommend Hotel France
The basement room is very cosy and suitable for about
6 to 8 people!
And also very handy for the red light area!

Ferry from Hull into Rotterdam is great but remember your cabin number, all the corridors look the same
