I like piss taking and funny lyrics, or lyrics about something which I can relate to. I hate sloppy woppy boo hoo love song lyrics. I hate screaming woman love songs and boybands and anyone from a boy band. I like screaming in songs. I like noises and loud instruments getting thrashed about.
I know what I like and I like what I know, getting better in your wardrobe.
As the sun beats down and I lie on the bench I can always hear them talk. Me, I'm just a lawnmower, you can tell me by the way I walk.

And your bald head of course...

For me, it's a blend of the two. You can always hear that it works and it'll always stand the test of time.

Present masters of the job are Wilco. Great musicians, simplistic but crafted. There's some great music around at the moment. You just have to go and look for it.

If I want lyrics I can always read a poem.
The reason British pop songs rule the world is the tune, the rhythm, and the arrangement. It's certainly not the lyrics.
French songs often have superb lyrics yet their music is 95% shite.

.
Can I use Chris Difford and Joe Strummer to counter that argument?
You can try. Then you can explain to me why people who don't even speak English buy those records for their lyrics.

I agree its the tune that grabs you first, that is the most immediate thing.
But the lyrics are what makes the difference between a good band and a great band.
That's why I would define a band such as the Charlatans as a good band. The lyrics can be naive or a little bit naff at times, stopping them from being great, but not to the extent that it makes them fall below good.
The sign of a great band/singer is getting the two of them spot on.
As for the Smiths. I used to come home and devour the lyrics on the record sleeve at least twice over before even putting the record on. Morrissey inspired me to write more than any author.

I think they start off with great lyrics or have some great lyrics in there, but then they lose the plot a little, no a lot.

eg Sunrise (off lowlife - poss their best lp? mmmmm)

I've been waiting to hear your voice for too long now
One-way conversations do not work somehow
Tell me, how does one get your soul in touch with the one above
When one-way conversations pay a price for the use of love
I tried so hard last night, you would not talk to me
I live with the fear of a few with the gift
And I know what's going to be

Why did you never speak my name in front of my family?
You gave me a gift that you then took away
Are you ever going before?
Your name might be God but you do not say that much to me
Your name I forgot but you don't say that much to me
We might be your black sheep,
But you forgot us a long time ago
We might be your lost sheep,
But it's time you remembered us now

As we spend our days together, nothing can go wrong
No one told the truth about it because it was so strong
If you ever think of me, a gift within my name
If you read between the lines, you'll hang your head in shame
Easy ears will never hear, the ice will never freeze
Whatever I have done for you I did because you complained

Yes they are!
Or to be fair, just a teensy weensy bit less bad than Joy Division.
