I gave two blokes a lift to Middlesborough after a game once. One was nine and he'd already broke my foot at Leeds Festival. The other one was about 30 and he was drinking anti-freeze and cherry brandy in the passenger seat.

Scariest 15 minutes of my life. bbolt

I used to hitchhike loads when I was at Uni in Manchester. I was mainly picked up by truck drivers who were good craic. I was once picked up by a footy league ref, but I've forgotten his name.

The funniest time was when I was picked up by a businessman in a Jag in Leeds. After a bit, he asked me what I'd do if someone who had given me a lift, made a pass at me. I replied that I'd knock his effing head off. He quickly made an excuse that he had missed his turn and dropped me at the next services.

I've just read that back and it sounds dodgy, but it wasn't. Hitch hiking was a great form of travel back then for a poor student. I wouldn't advocate it nowadays though.

You could have given him a quick nosh. Where's the harm in that?
